I would like to take this opportunity to explain the low GPA

I would like to take this opportunity to explain the low GPA in my undergraduate school. I pursued my Undergraduate degree in Electronics and communication from GITAM University in India. Ever since I was a child, I was always passionate about Civil Engineering and constructions. I was always persuaded by my father who is also a Civil engineer by profession and because of that I wanted to get a Civil Engineering degree and help develop my community. But my parents had different thoughts. None to blame but, the society and the village where I am coming from doesn’t accept women as Civil Engineers, take up an on-road jobs. Fearing criticism, my parents influenced me to opt for Electronics and Communication degree.

As it was a course of not my choice, the college kid in me back then was rebellious, stubborn and was hesitant to develop absorption in my course work. I started focusing my interests elsewhere like representing my college in many NGO’s across the state, created new programs to uplift the society, supported Adult care, and became a teaching volunteer for an all-girls blind school. Out of curiosity, I also spent most of my time attending many workshops related to civil engineering in my college. All these activities outside my coursework ate up most of the time and pushed me back in my academics.

Very soon reality hits like a storm. My family’s economic conditions at that time were not very stable and being the only child, I was cautioned to be the only next generation bread winner of my family. It was almost the end of second year, and I realized I was way behind all my peers and need a lot of improvement to get selected in the campus placements to be able to support my family. Then I said to myself ‘My interest in life comes from setting myself huge, apparently unachievable changes and trying to rise above them’ (Richard Branson) and I wanted to start gathering myself again. Always being one of the best students of the class from childhood, I believed in myself. I Did not shy away from taking support of my friends, and by requesting the heIp of the faculty members I attended special classes which helped me to significantly improve my grades from the 6th semester till the very end of my course. Later, in my final year, I was successfully able to bag a job through the campus placements.

At the end I realized new challenges are what keeps a person on their tippy toes. The major life lessons I learned throughout is I realized irrespective of the domain, journey is what is important. I was able to overcome this hurdle in life though my perseverance, and hard work. I strongly believe that GPA is not a true representation of my dedication and work ethic.
