For this assignment, after having read all the readings for this week, I want you to try and compose your own comprehensive definitions of “substance abuse” and “substance addiction”. Looking at your definitions, where is there overlap between the two? Can you be “addicted” but not “abusing”, or vice-versa? How much of your definitions rely upon social factors/circumstances? Is it possible to create a fair and just process by which to label an individual an “addict” or “abuser”, particularly when you consider the social stigma surrounding such a title, & the socioeconomic factors which impact whether an individual will suffer consequences for their actions? As you can see in the textbook, the APA’s protocol in the DSM has recently merged these concepts into one category—do you agree with their decision to do so, & why or why not? Using specific examples from the extra reading by Friedman, what do you think of his concept of “sociopharmacology”? Finally, of all the sociological theories discussed in this chapter of your textbook (pgs. 85-102), which one do you feel most accurately describes the reasoning behind why you have either used or not used drugs?
