Unit 2 DB: What are the Risk Factors for Cancer?
We have learned that when the cell loses control of cellular division, cancer can be the result. We know that there are several risk factors for cancer. In this discussion, describe which of those risk factors are significant for you? What steps could you take could reduce that risk?
In response to your peers, do you have risk factors in common? Have you learned about a risk factor that you weren’t aware of?

Hello everyone,
What are the Risk Factors for Cancer?
Drinking alcohol raises your chances of developing cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, larynx, liver, and breast (LoConte et al., 2018).” Because I grew up around my mother and grandmother smoking a pack a day, tobacco and second-hand smoke struck home. I, too, began smoking at the age of 17 and stopped at the age of 22. Cigarette smoke contains carcinogens, and I believe that it disrupts the normal cell division cycle. Because of damaged DNA, the carcinogenic characteristics prevent the cells from dying when they should. I am aware that I significantly raised my cancer risk even in that short time, but I am hoping that stopping at such an early age would work in my favor.
Cancer runs in my family on both sides, and it has claimed the lives of many of my loved ones. It is not clear that my inherited genes put me at a higher risk for cancer, but it is certainly a possibility. I am not sure if I can identify cancer most vulnerable to, but it would be skin cancer if I chose one. I like getting a tan on the beach, at sea, and, of course, in the sun. My uncle just died away from skin cancer, and I never wear sunscreen. Isn’t it nearly impolite of me not to utilize it? I have always been taught that it is simply to avoid burning, not the numerous other potentially fatal consequences. When it comes to all of this, education is perhaps the most powerful weapon. Obesity, aging, radiation, and cancers are all causes and consequences that most generations are unaware of. I will use a safe and highly rated sunscreen from now on, wear a hat, and not walking outdoors without a shirt 24/7 in the summer.
VR,
Sonia

Hello Class,
The risk factor that causes me to be the most alert is knowing that both of my parents and grandparents all have cancer. Knowing that is genetic means that I will have a high chance of catching it. All of them are extremely heavy smokers which has led to me not wanting to smoke because I am unsure if that is what led to the cancer diagnosis, so it is better to avoid it overall. There are many different things that you could do that to prevent cancer such as not being directly in the sun too long, not smoking, wearing mask when dealing with certain chemicals and overall taking care of yourself and exercising on a regular to ensure that you are healthy.
If you or anyone you may know could potentially be at high risk for catching cancer it is important that they are being checked regularly as well as paying attention to any changes with their body. Noticing one thing that is abnormal early could save you from a long-term treatment plan.

Unit 2 DB: What Are the Factors for Cancer?
Top of Form
The most common risk factors of cancer include: sun exposure, radiation exposure, chemicals, tobacco, alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, being overweight, family history of cancer, some viruses, and other substances. Some of these factors that are significant to me include tobacco, and family history of cancer. The main thing I can do to prevent cancer is to stop smoking tobacco. This product is the main thing that causes cancer, but could be extremely addictive.
I’m not quite sure if there is a way to prevent cancer if it’s been passed down genetically. What are some things that I could work on to stop smoking tobacco for good? I am not a chain smoker, but at least once a day.
