Assignment 2
In “On the Rainy River,” we are introduced to the narrator (Tim) who receives notification that he has been drafted into the Vietnam War. He seriously considers fleeing to Canada in order to escape this “death sentence”; he is ethically against this war and cannot comprehend fighting for a cause in which he does not believe. He describes his moral dilemma in great detail before eventually choosing not to run away and instead join the war.
O’Brien writes, “It was a kind of schizophrenia. A moral split. I couldn’t make up my mind. I feared the war, yes, but I also feared exile. I was afraid of walking away from my own life, my friends and family, my whole history, everything that mattered to me. I feared losing the respect of my parents. I feared the law. I feared ridicule and censure.”
He later says, “I would go to the war—I would kill and maybe die—because I was embarrassed not to…I was a coward. I went to the war.”
In a one-page detailed, argumentative response, defend, challenge, or qualify O’Brien’s idea that he was a “coward” for participating in (i.e. killing others & risking his own life) a war that he didn’t believe in.
Defend = agree with
Challenge = disagree with
Qualify = agree with to an extent
