Tarleton State University

Semester Year

To adhere to APA guidelines, your paper should be the following: 12-point Calibri, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. Your paper should be 3-4 pages (not including photo artifacts). This is a professional paper. You should write in complete sentences and use academic vocabulary. [Delete this paragraph and anything in italics before you submit your ALE.]

Introduction

Briefly describe your field experience/practicum. Include the following information 1) district, 2) school, 3) teacher, 4) grade level and 5) content areas. Include when you went and how often. Also include a short list of your major responsibilities from the field experience checklist and include any other responsibilities you had. A short paragraph will suffice. Just report the facts of your field experience. No reflection.

Before Practicum

This paragraph needs to include three beliefs you had before your practicum. Make sure they contain detail and depth and explain a little bit about why you believe what you believe.

At the beginning of my practicum, I had the following beliefs about teaching and learning:

Belief #1:

Belief #2:

Belief #3:

Making Connections

You read, hear, and learn a lot of information in all of your different courses here at Tarleton; however, it is different when you actually get to see, hear, and experience what we are talking about in our courses in the real classroom with real children.  Think about some of the things that you have already learned about literacy in READ 3311 and READ 3321 this semester. What is one teaching/learning practice related to literacy that you’ve seen or done in your mentor teacher’s classroom that modeled a specific practice that you learned in your reading courses at Tarleton? Your response should include a specific example of what you learned in one of your courses and its real-world application in the classroom. This paragraph should list the course at Tarleton, the specific description of what you learned (with an APA citation from your book or readings) and a detailed example of how this information was applied in the classroom.

Perspectives

Describe one thing you observed in your field experience/practicum that was not necessarily best practice related to literacy? Based on what you have learned this semester, what would you have done differently? Please do not include any teacher/student names or schools. The purpose of this prompt is not to be critical or judge anyone. The purpose is to reflect and think about what you have learned about literacy. This paragraph should include a brief description of what you observed in the classroom and an explanation of what you would’ve done differently.

Conclusions

Now that your field experience/practicum is complete, take some time and reflect on what you have learned and what you believe about teaching, learning, and literacy. Write three statements about any topic related to education that begins with “I believe…”. Make sure these beliefs are detailed and contain detail and depth and explain a little bit about why you believe what you believe.

At the conclusion of my practicum, I now have the following beliefs about teaching and learning:

Belief #1:

Belief #2:

Belief #3:

Once you have completed these three statements, look back on your statements from the beginning of the semester. How have your “I believe” statements transformed? How are they similar? How are they different?

Transformations

What was your “aha” moment or “so what” moment during your field experience/practicum? In other words, what do you now understand about teaching that you did not know before this field experience/practicum? This is a reflection of what you have learned this semester. Make this paragraph reflect the depth of knowledge and understanding that you have gained this semester.

Photo Artifacts

Copy and paste 6 photos from your field reports/field experience here with the description, tying it to student achievement, literacy, and/or your learning. (Please make sure your photos are not too large.) Descriptions should be written in complete sentences and should describe the photo and the connection to student achievement, literacy, and/or your learning.
