Discuss the potential benefits and concerns related to using mixed methods in a single research study. How might such a study give a broader understanding than a single-method study? How might a mixed-method study challenge the capabilities of a researcher?
Lesson text ( 1 of 2) – Using Mixed Methods
The use of more than one method of data collection in a single research study is intended to provide a more multi-faceted view of the environment being studied. While small-scale and short-term studies may allow for the use of only one research method, more ambitious and open-ended studies are likely to benefit greatly from the use of multiple methods. Different methods are likely to illuminate the site of study in different ways, thus allowing a researcher to construct a fuller picture of the reality of the environment/research participants. For example, if a researcher records their observations at a site of study and also conducts interviews with individuals at that site, the eventual research report that is produced will presumably provide a deeper understanding of the site than would observations or interviews alone.
