Part 1: Propose a relevant nursing practice problem for an evidence-based practice project. Explain why you selected this topic and how it is relevant to advance nursing practice. Include one research article that demonstrates support for the nursing practice problem.
The problem chosen is adult obesity. Subsequently, the CDC (2021) states that obesity is a common challenge in the US and globally, affecting an estimated 42.4% of the country. Compared to 2000, 2018 figures show an estimated 12% increase in obesity prevalence, while severe cases doubled from an initial 4.2% to 9.2% (CDC, 2021). One challenge that makes obesity a significant challenge is the disease’s discrepancy, as it tends to affect some groups more than others. Subsequently, the CDC (2021) states that those non-Hispanic black adults have the highest prevalence rate, with 49.6% of the population affected. At the same time, Asians are the second-most affected group, with 42.2% of the group affected, while non-Hispanic Asian adults have the least prevalence rate at 17.4% (CDC, 2021). Thus, overall, minority groups are more affected by obesity due to health discrepancies.
Socioeconomic status is another aspect that affects obesity prevalence rates. According to the CDC (2021) identify education is a crucial factor determining obesity incidence rates. Subsequently, people with college degrees are less exposed and have lower prevalence rates than individuals with lower levels of education. Similarly, income levels determine the risk factors for the condition, including access to screening, information asymmetry, and prevention awareness. In such cases, people with a lower income are generally likely to have higher prevalence rates than higher-income earners. According to the CDC (2021), the burden of disease associated with obesity is significant, with $147 billion of the healthcare budget committed to medical costs of treating the condition. In such a case, the illness has a considerable prevalence rate and adversely affects the quality of life of affected people, hence, the need to address it.
Another reason to address obesity is its comorbid relations. In this regard, the CDC (2021) states that the illness often cooccurs or causes heart diseases, stroke and is likely to facilitate or increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Moreover, different types of cancers have a higher possibility of occurring in people affected by obesity. In such a case, treatment is vital owing to the cost of treatment, the burden of disease, and the risk of developing other conditions. One of the interventions that obese patients can follow is exercise. The implication is that physical activity is affordable to most individuals, convenient, and effective in reducing the risk and severity of the disease (CDC, 2021). From an advanced practice approach, exercise is essential as an affordable, preventive approach at the primary care level that affected populations can implement to enhance their quality of life. The emphasis is on prevention.
Part II: In the table below, describe the population and the intervention. (You will continue drafting the PICOT, completing the shaded areas in Topic 3.)
PICOT Question
P
Population
Adults aged above 18.
I
Intervention
Brief exercise, including brief running for 150 minutes a week as recommended by the CDC.
C
Comparison
No brisk jogging as recommended by the CDC.
O
Outcome
A loss of 10% body weight
T
Timeframe
3 months
PICOT
In adults aged 18 and above, what is the effect of brisk jogging for 150 minutes a week in attaining 10% body weight loss after three months compared to no jogging?
Problem Statement
There is an increased prevalence of obesity among adults aged 18 and above, with health discrepancies and related lack of adequate physical activity playing a crucial role in influencing such rates.
