Basic Synthesis

Reading one is written for an audience that is involved in the university environment. In

addition, this reading is intended for the field of education and communication. Its general

theme is analyzing the environment in which the iGen generation has grown up to give

reasons that explain their behavior. Therefore, the purpose of the text is to learn how to be able

to relate with iGen. However, reading two is intended for an audience of managers as well as it

focuses on the field of social networks and economics. The central theme of reading two is the

importance for a company to build and maintain a personal brand. The text’s purpose is that

knowing the behavior of generation Z in social networks is the main key.

Reading one states that communicating with students of the iGen generation is not

effective. The authors of the text are in charge of analyzing each of the reasons that have led to

this consequence. Firstly, an analysis of the hearts of the iGen generation students is made,

where their close relationship with technology is highlighted, as well as the economic and social

circumstances that have marked this generation. After conducting this analysis, the authors

specify what behaviors and abilities to expect from iGen students, taking into account the

context in which they grew up. In this section, their motivations, their mental health, or their

preferences when choosing a degree are detailed. Beck & Wright, in the last section of the text,

stated that “In an era with so much computer-generated content and when people are regularly

asked to verify that they are not robots, and when even telemarketers have been replaced by

recordings, students appreciate knowing that real people are at the other end of

communications.” (4). This is the main conclusion that the authors reach. In other words, the

bottom line is the effective way in which it can be established a conversation with an iGen

student, so that their attention can be captured. Moreover, according to the authors, the best

way to do this is by showing iGen students that they are interacting with people, not devices,

during the conversation.

On the other hand, in reading two the content is more focused on a work environment,

the opposite of what happened in the reading one, whose content was academic. Nevertheless,

both readings have in common that they explain how to establish communication relationships

with a specific target, and both take into account the technological environment of the

generations analyzed. Conversely, the author argues her main idea of reading two in the

following fragment: Alexandra Vitelar exposes “This paper has shown that Gen Z individuals are

conscious of their brand, and they believe that the development of an online personal

brand can help them differentiate in a highly competitive market. In addition, the study

contributes to our understanding of how Gen Z individuals who are at the beginning of their

careers utilize social media and networking contexts to build an online reputation. ” (10).

In these lines extracted from the text, it is seen that social networks have a great

relevance in the lives of the individuals of Generation Z, as also happens with the iGen

generation, as explained above. Therefore, understanding the importance of social media in the

lives of individuals is crucial to establishing successful relationships with them.

By gathering the information from Reading One and Reading Two, it is possible to come

up with the idea that social media plays a key role in the way that new generations of individuals

communicate. And from this idea, it can arrive at a new one: knowing the relationship

between these people and social networks can be of great help to maintain efficient and

effective communication with them. However, I reckon that there is an issue that has not been

resolved in either of the two readings and that could contribute to establishing good

communication since the origins of this event would be better understood. The

question is: why social media does have so much power and is so influential for the iGen

generation and for the Z generation?
