Persuasive Writing
Course Project

Due 12/21/2021

Instructions

In this project, you will develop and refine your business communication skills to convey ideas clearly and persuasively to achieve results from writing. By conducting a self-reflective activity, you will identify the results you would like to achieve. Through an assessment of your stakeholders, you will determine who the decision makers are and how to adapt to this audience. By applying editing techniques, you will explore ways to create and transform a one-page proposal to another medium ( email).

In Part One, you will reflect on the results you are trying to achieve. You will identify the decision makers and what they need to approve your “ask.” And you will select the components you need to build your argument.

In Part Two, you will create a one-page proposal, a format used most commonly in business. You will practice how to organize your argument into an easily read and understood document.

In Part Three, you will transform your one-page proposal to another medium, employing editing techniques that compel you to focus on the most important selling points of your argument.

Instructions

Answer the following questions,

Incorporate the design principles into your one-page proposal.

Design Your One-Page Proposal

I would like the proposal to be about asking HR to extend maternity leave for mothers that have a baby in NICU.

What are the four key elements for your proposal header — title to reflect the actual “ask” (no more than ten words), audience/decision makers, writer’s name and contact information, and submission date?

How can you summarize your persuasive points and connect to the “Call to Action” for the decision makers to approve the “ask”? Avoid introducing new information in the closing, which is unnecessary noise that will interfere with the arguments that you developed in the body.

Can you organize a relevant list or table for high skim-value in the body? Make sure you use a list or table moderately (only one in a one-page proposal) to allow sufficient space to develop the main points in paragraphs.

How can you use the page layout to create a visually attractive design and to enhance readability? Use business standards — one-inch margins, 12 pt. spacing after paragraphs/sections, 11-point or 12-point font for the body text, minimal and complementary colors (avoid red-green and blue-yellow combinations for audiences with color blindness), and concise reading blocks that do not exceed ten lines.

Part Three
Transform the Proposal for a Different Medium
___________________________________________________________________

Communication occurs across several platforms in business. In this part of the course project, you will showcase your ability to transform the one-page proposal to an email proposal. A key part of the transformation process is identifying what is essential information to keep for your argument, and what information is expendable and less useful for this particular medium.

To complete this part of the project, you will need to answer the questions below to transform your one-page proposal to a 300-word (or fewer) email.

Instructions

Answer the following questions, drawing on the work you did in this module.

Provide your answers in three to five sentences in the spaces below.

Transform Your Proposal

Which parts of your one-page proposal are essential for the email?

Which parts of your one-page proposal are expendable (will not alter the meaning) in the email?

How can you write and organize a shorter message to emphasize your main points clearly and directly for the audience?

What key sections will you choose to include and/or modify in the email?

Write a concise 300-word email while retaining your essential arguments to develop and support your “ask.” Highlight the areas that you transformed.
