Option 2:

Come up with your own research question and write a research proposal. The research question must be testable using quantitative analysis.

Your research proposal must include:

Introduction

What is already known about the topic?

(For Option 1: criticism of the original research)

What research question do you have?

What theories can you use for your research question?

Hypothesis, data, methods

What is your hypothesis?

What data and variables are you using to test the hypothesis?

(For Option 1: compare the data to the original research and explain how it’s improved.)

How was the data collected?

How would you analyze the data?

(For Option 1: compare the method to the original research and explain how it’s improved.)

Descriptive statistics

Report relevant descriptive statistics of your data.

Conclusion/limitations

Brief summary of your research and your expected outcome based on theory (or theories) you introduced

Are there any limitations especially due to the collected data or data analysis?

Must be 800-1250 words. Papers with less than 800 words will automatically receive 25/100.

Must include a minimum of 5 peer-reviewed research papers as a reference. Proposals without 5 peer-reviewed papers will automatically receive 25/100.

Grading criteria:

Introduction (35/100)

Must be cohesive. Beware of strawman or using irrelevant research papers; logical fallacy makes your research unconvincing.

Properly introduce what is already known about the topic, including theories. Use peer-reviewed articles that provide sufficient background information.

Address flaws in the past research, if there are any.

Introduce your research question.

Hypothesis, data, methods (35/100)

Your hypothesis must be clearly stated and testable. Must correspond with your research question.

Provide information about the data that you have decided to use: the population, sampling method(s), sample size, types of variables, etc.

Choose and explain the appropriate method(s) of analysis.

Select dependent and independent (and perhaps control) variables that answer your research question.

Descriptive statistics (20/100)

Provide a table of descriptive statistics of all variables used in your research.

Interpret the descriptive statistics table, especially mean, median, skewness, outliers, and standard deviation.

Conclusion/limitations (10/100)

Summarize your research topic and research question.

Report expected results of the research based on the theories/previous research.

Discuss limitations. Can you spot any weakness in your research/data? What problems should be addressed before you take the proposal to actual research?
