Writing your introduction section of your paper
APA Style Format
1. Page number of paper (location in paper): PAGE 3
2. Title of the introduction in paper is the title of your paper. Just retype your paper’s title at the top of page, centered. The title of the section is not Introduction. You may want to do this right before submitting your final paper, since you might not know what your paper’s title will be until the end of the project. Look up in the APA manual what should be included in the title of a student paper/manuscript.
3. Margins: 1 inch all around
4. Font: Times New Roman, 10-12 point
5. Spacing: Double
6. Tense: Past
7. Voice: Active
8. POV: Third

9. Minimum number of paragraphs of ENTIRE introduction section: 5 paragraphs
a. Hook paragraph: ONE (5-7 sentences)
b. Literature review: THREE (7-10 sentences)
c. Hypothesis/prediction paragraph: ONE (5 sentences)
d. Total number of pages minimum: Approximately 2 pages
10. The hook paragraph is based on facts or informed statements (but not subjective opinions)! The facts that can be written into this paragraph include: detailed statistics, definition of constructs, discussion of a theory (not hypothesis) being tested. Must in include in-text citations. It also introduces the GENERAL TOPIC of the paper and relationships of these facts and definitions. See journal article we read as a class or any found for your own paper.
11. The literature review is the summaries of the studies you found on your topic. You will summarize each study in at least one paragraph. Order the studies LOGICALLY. Use topic and transition sentences! Think of the journal article summary assignment. Follow the same format. ONLINE CLASSES, IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED AN ARTICLE SUMMARY ASSIGNMENT YET, WE WILL DO SO SHORTLY.
12. The last paragraph is hypothesis/prediction paragraph. See section: THE CURRENT STUDY in journal articles or last paragraph(s) of introduction sections. Start the paragraph with the sentence: The current study… OR The purpose of the current study…. AND next state the goal of the study. Describe the theoretical implications of your study (how does your study fit into the published literature, are you replicating, further examining, researching something new, etc.). Next write the hypothesis. Then write the prediction after. Finally, end with a statement about the third variable of the study.
