Question that was asked: As a future NGN, what resonated most with

Question that was asked: As a future NGN, what resonated most with you in the study and why? And Where do you think the priority should be in helping NGNs transition into the workplace?

Discussion 1: New grad transition

Peer’s post that needs a reply

The most meaningful part of the new grad transition study to me is how it examines the challenges and stressors that new grad nurses (NGN’s) had to face while beginning in their field of work. I enjoyed learning about these because I feel that it will better prepare me for what to expect as a soon-to-be new grad nurse. I feel comfort in knowing that almost all new grad nurses experience similar stories and have all had to experience different challenges when transitioning from school to practicing as a licensed registered nurse. Learning about these experiences makes me feel that it is ok and very common to experience challenges and stressors as an NGN and that I should take them as an opportunity to learn and grow as a nurse.

I believe that priority should be put on implementing helpful and educational orientation programs for new grad nurses, NGNS need easily accessible support and resources such as mentors, education, and feedback to help them easily transition into the workforce (Regan et al., 2017). It is the duty of the organization to ensure that nurse leaders and managers are given the proper resources to help support a positive and seamless transition of these new nurses (Regan et al., 2017). Through these orientation programs new nurses will have the opportunity to ask questions, get comfortable and learn new things. without the fear of seeing criticized or the worry of not knowing everything (Regan et al., 2017).

Discussion 2: Vision for the Future

Question that was asked: Select a principal and/ or vision and discuss how it is most relevant to where you envision yourself practicing (labour and delivery) in the future.

Nursing is a diverse profession. You can work with people of all age spectrums, of all conditions, illnesses, and even in different locations. I envision myself working as either as ICU or ER nurse, experiencing different parts of the world. That is why I chose the principle of being ‘Optimized’ (FPT Committee on Health Workforce, 2020). This principle reflects the need to be up to date with scope of practice and frameworks, so that patients receive high quality, safe care (FPT Committee on Health Workforce, 2020). It also mentions the Quadruple Aim Framework which identifies improving patient experience, population health, work life of providers and decreasing cost as means to optimize healthcare performance and sustainability (FPT Committee on Health Workforce, 2020). Working as a ICU/ER nurse, the patients are in critical condition, requiring nurses to be up to date with practice and ensuring all measures are taken for the patients benefit. The field can sometimes be fast paced and stressful, so by improving the work life of the providers, it reduces burnout, turnover and increases therapeutic results of patients (Garcia et al., 2019). The main goal of nurses is to improve patient’s experience and work for therapeutic patient outcomes, and this can be achieved with the use of optimizing practice towards the quadruple aim framework.
