We walked across Glasgow to illustrate the differences in health status in one city. (Module 6 – Social and Behavioral Sciences and Public Health, “Walking across Glasgow”).

(1) There is one chilling short comment that the journalist makes about the similarity of his experience to one in the USA. What did he say about inequality? (couple of sentences on what the journalist said.}

(2) And what if you walked across your home town – could you find the differences approaching those in Glasgow? What town, what neighborhoods are at the start and at the finish of your walk? (Two or three sentences for the comparison to your home town.)

We had a couple of fabulous speakers for global health – Dr. Ronald Blanton on Trop Med, and Dr. Charlotte Colvin on TB. (Module 7 – Global Health)

(3) Dr. Blanton talked a bit about the history of Tropical Medicine. What did he say about having a separate discipline named “trop med?” (He said a few things so name the one you think is most important. (“SPHU 1010 Dr. Blanton 10-11-21”).

(4) Dr. Colvin talked about one of the greatest fears of global health epidemiologists about tuberculosis (TB). What was the thing that sends chills down the spines of global public health about TB? ( “Colvin 10-15-21 TB”).

We had Dr. Lina Moses come in to talk about One Health. (Module 8 – One Health 10-22-21)

Non-communicable diseases was an interesting section, too. (Module 10 – Non-communicable Disease) I have three questions about it for you, and you can answer in one or two sentences for each.

(8) How do marketers sell alcohol to youth – give one example of their tactics? (“SPHU 1010 M9S29 NCD Alcohol 2021”)

We had those powerful, telling podcasts about maternal health by NPR and ProPublica. Plus Amy Zapata came from the LA State Office of Public Health to talk about what their office does to research and target maternal mortality. One podcast was about a woman you would never expect to have problems in birth. There was one podcast was a description of what has California done to directly address these kinds of maternal care failures described in that case. (Module 12 MCH)

(9) What has CA done to lower their maternal morality rates? ( “Podcast – Addressing the solutions – California finds a path”) A few descriptive sentences is all you need.

(10) What has LA State Office of Public Health, Family Bureau done to investigate and target maternal mortality in Louisiana? (“Presentation Zapata Lecture – Tulane 11-3-21”)

We had a lecture from a guest speaker about attitudes about food and one on Nutrition basics. (Module 11 Nutrition and Food Systems)

(11) How much protein do we need a day? What happens when we overeat it? (“SPHU 1010 M1S27 Nutrition Fa 2021C”)

(12) Where would you start to reduce food waste, where does Tristam recommend change? (“TEDTalk on food waste”)

We explored drug use, policies, and methods of reducing overdose deaths (Module 13 – Mental Health and Substance Abuse).

(13) Mary Campbell came in to talk to us about harm reduction. What are the foundational principles of harm reduction? (“SPH 1010 Intro to Harm Reduction 11-12-21”) Give two key attributes of the approach.

(14) The history of drugs, drug laws and role of marketing prescription drugs was the theme of one lecture. What role did the Sackler family play in the level of opiod addition today? A couple of sentences about their business and marketing tactics is all you need.

(15) What is going on with their agreement to pay compensation? As of the date of the lecture, what was going on? (“The family that built an empire of pain” “Recent NBC report on the lawsuit”) Two or three sentences would cover it.

You guys liked to hear about oral health (Module15 – Oral Health).

(16) Why don’t dentists and physicians work in the same system, use the same kinds of records and disease codes? (“SPHU 1010 M14S30 Dental Health Fa 2021”)

Social justice, and ethics is core to public health. We had some stories about important ethical violations that lead to changes in medical and health research (Module 19 – Ethics).

(17) What is the connection between Guatemala research and Tuskegee Syphilis study? (“The Story of Guatemala”)

(18) t Tulane, if you wanted to do a study that included human subjects, what would you need to do? (SPHU 1010 Ethics Fa 2021). Just a couple of sentences about the requirement.

Dr. Ashley Volion talked to us about disability history and treating people respectfully. (Module 16- Disability)

(19) Give two alternatives to problematic terms that people use for different forms of disability. What did Dr. Volion recommend? A couple of sentences will be enough. (“Disability Consciousness”)

FYI- If you haven’t heard Trevor Noah’s interview Judy Huemann (“Trevor Noah and the disability advocate Judy Huemann”), listen to it for two reasons: Judy Huemann is an incredible advocate for including disabilities in all policies. And, watch their interchange and the respect that Noah expresses. He demonstrates the attributes that Dr. Volion talked about in her lecture.

An alumni of the BSPH program (and MHA graduate), Phil Krause, described the different kinds of health systems. (Module17 Health Systems and Management).

(20) What is the health system that operates in the USA? (“SPHU 101 Health Systems Winder 2021”). Might take three or four sentences.

(21) Why do you think so much media is focused on changing the average individual’s behavior to impact climate change? Is that the right approach?
