Not all managers lead, and not all leaders manage. Some people can do both. What is the difference between leading and managing? Bob Davids is a well-known entrepreneur who is featured in a TED Talks video titled “The Rarest Commodity is Leadership Without Ego” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQrPVmcgJJk&t=20s . In it, he discusses what a manager does, what a leader does, and the traits you need to do both. All references must be current 2017 up to recent (published within the past five years).
After you watch the video

answer the following questions:
- Davids tells a story about literally “jumping in the trenches” with his employees who were working on a project he was overseeing. Discuss a time when a nurse manager or leader for whom you worked “jumped in the tranches” with you. How did it make you feel about this person, and how did it effect how you viewed your job as a nurse?
- The concept of giving power back to workers is discussed. Reflect on a time when power was given to you at your job by a manager/leader. How did it make you feel?
- Davids states the following: “Leadership is a gift. You either have it or you don’t.” Do you agree with this statement? If you don’t already have the gift of leadership, how can you get it?
