Project Objective:
To design the foundations for the pedestrian, cyclists Te Rewa Rewa Bridge (Figure 1).
The bridge across Waiwhakaiho River is part of the northern extension of the Coastal Walkway, connecting New Plymouth with Bell Block, in Taranaki district on the west coast of North Island of New Zealand.
The footbridge’s spectacular shape evokes “a sense of wind as a metaphor for the enduring spirit of the dead buried around the Rewa Rewa Pa site” (Wikipidia, 2016). Peter Mulqueen, (the designer), wanted to achieve a bridge with a “harmonious and dignified character” (Wikipidia, 2016) and certainly he successfully achieved this (Figure 2).
With the ribs yielding to the prevailing wind, the bridge is aligned to Mount Taranaki. The sacred mountain is framed within the skewed arch (Figure 3) when viewed while leaving the sacred ground – promising what is eternal.
The one span bridge construction started in 2008 and completed in 2010. Officially opened on 5 June 2010, during its first full month of operation, the bridge was used by 55,756 cyclists and pedestrians (Wikipidia, 2016).
The bridge deck was placed 4.5 m above the normal flow level to withstand both floods (100 year flood level) and lahars from volcanic eruptions from Mount Taranaki. The centreline span of the deck between the abutments is close to 69 m. The width of the pathway (bridge deck) is 3 m and accommodates besides pedestrian and cyclists, ambulance and other service vehicles. Provided in the following drawings are some general notes on the construction of the bridge
(GE1), the bridge elevation (GE4) and geotechnical information (GE5). Further to the skewed deck, note that the single tube steel arch also skewed, in that it springs from the opposite outer sides of the abutment blocks.
The weight of the structure (permanent load) is equivalent to 4.0 kPa over the full area of the deck. The imposed loading from pedestrians/cyclists/vehicles is equivalent to 3.4 kPa over the full area of the bridge deck.
For the given bridge and given conditions, you are required to:
1. Design suitable foundations for the bridge abutments.
2. Estimate the settlement of the abutments under gravity loads.
3. Hand-in a design report (accompanied by a written statement that this is your own work)
