Purpose: This purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with how policing has evolved in the U.S. Who best to give us the story than Herman Goldstein? His work has spanned decades. He was a researcher for the American Bar Foundation study, he worked with O.W. Wilson in Chicago and then later he developed problem-oriented policing (POP). For this activity, you will view videos of Herman Goldstein (aka “father of POP”) highlighting the evolution of contemporary American policing. We will go into more detail about POP later in the semester. Instructions: Step 1: Watch the video interview with Dr. Herman Goldstein. Allow yourself at least an hour and 15 minutes to watch the video. Be sure to take notes while you are watching so that you can answer the questions below. What were the three (3) significant lessons that Goldstein learned about policing while he served with the Chicago Police Department under the supervision of Superintendent . Wilson? Think about the elements of police professionalization here. After joining the University of Wisconsin, Goldstein participated in the preparation of The Task Force Report on the Police. What position did Goldstein take on the role of police in society? Were the police to be solely crime fighters or something else? Explain. Writing Guidelines/Format: This assignment should adhere to your preferred citation style (. MLA, Chicago, APA, etc.) and include the following requirements: typed, double- spaced, 1-inch margins, in-text citation of references (if citations are used), and a reference page Write this paper using third person pronouns.
