Immigration Policy Project – Part 2
In Part 1 you worked on understanding the background of DACA and its current benefits and limitations.
Now, in Part 2, you will critique the DACA program and propose changes to DACA and/or imagine a different policy to addresses specific issues facing undocumented immigrants. Consider the limitations of DACA as they pertain to people’s social and political incorporation, psychological well-being, socioeconomic status and mobility, etc. What kinds of social policies and/or changes to existing laws do you think should be introduced to address some of the specific issues facing people who are undocumented?
Write an essay (about 1,200 words) which addresses the points below. Your essay should include at least four references. You may use materials from class and outside resources from scholarly and/or reputable sources. At least two of your references must be from class materials. You may use the resources that you used in Part 1. Reputable sources include scholarly articles from academic journals, major newspapers (e.g., NY Times, Wall Street Journal), and most books published by major publishers/university presses. Some news websites are also considered reputable sources (e.g., Vox, Huffington Post). Make sure that your resources pass the CRAP test!
Use APA style in your essay. Incorporate in-text citations where appropriate. Include a separate references page. The references page doesn’t count towards your page count.
Note that, as always, you are not graded on your opinion or position on any particular position but rather on your ability to convincingly use evidence to demonstrate your argument.
Limits of DACA:
o What are the limitations of DACA as it currently stands? Identify at least two limitations. Be specific.
(You may use the limitations discussed in Part 1 but do not copy and paste your text from Part 1 into
Part 2.)
o In your opinion, why are these limitations? In other words, why do these specific provisions limit social, political, economic, etc. incorporation for undocumented immigrants? Provide specific examples from the course materials.
Policy changes:
o In your opinion, based on what you’ve learned about the situation(s) that undocumented immigrants face, what specific policy change(s) can be implemented to address the two limitations you identified above? Why do you propose these changes? What evidence, if any, exists to show that this would address the limitations? How would these changes be implemented? How would you know if this policy change was successful? Provide specific examples.
