The Role Of The Un In Preserving Global Peace And Harmony

Since its formulation in 1945, the United Nations (UN) has continued to adopt a series of many undertakings, all of which are meant to increase its ability to impart the globe positively. Maintaining international peace and security is the central objective of the UN. Most of its efforts have been praised, while some of its undertakings have been subject to harsh criticism for failing to enhance global peace and security. Its efforts are exemplified as they have helped prevent conflict, encourage peace among warring entities, deploy peacemakers, and create conditions that promote peace and security.
The United Nations, through most of its secondary agencies and institutions, continues to work to attain and sustain global peace and harmony. As outlined in the thesis statement, the UN’s primary goal is to maintain peace and security. Through the UN Security Council, the General Assembly, and the Secretary-General, have engaged in negotiations and peacekeeping missions, all of which are meant to enhance harmony (United Nations, 2022). The UN adopts preventive diplomacy as a strategic effort to meet its overarching goal of attaining international peace and harmony. These policies have helped to prevent conflict. Diplomacy is used to enhance and advocate for mediation among warring groups. The UN also deploys special representatives and persons. They are mandated to serve as envoys and agents of peace (United Nations, 2022). They champion harmony and understanding by encouraging the conflicting groups to reconcile their differences and identify amicable avenues to overcome the issues they experience. Peacekeeping is also a key undertaking by this agency. In areas where war is escalating, they deploy peacekeeping soldiers obligated to protect the interests of the innocent.
Thus, the UN has managed to meet its vital role of maintaining international peace and security through these undertakings. As research highlights, its efforts are exemplified as they have helped prevent conflict, encourage peace among warring entities, deploy peacemakers, and create conditions that promote peace and security. Future efforts to meet their central mission will see this agency explore more strategic avenues to promote peace and security on the global landscape.
