Police reform and criminal justice reform in the United States is a contentious and complex issue. Stark racial disparities in outcomes from incarceration rates to fatal shootings by police have been demonstrated to disproportionately impact people of color. Despite attempts to find ways to create a more equal justice system, America still largely remains a country where not all can be guaranteed equal treatment before the law. What are some of the reasons for these differing outcomes of policing and the justice system in the United States? What are some policies that can be enacted that may lead to more equal treatment? And finally, what are the potential institutional, cultural, and political barriers that may make these reforms difficult to achieve?
