Introduction
Punggol is situated in the north-eastern region of Singapore. Punggol was once a fishing village predominantly populated by the Malay ethnic group. However, villages were removed in the late 1990s to facilitate urban redevelopment of the area (Singapore Institute of Technology, 2016).
In recent years, there is a rapid increase in population between 2010 to 2015 as a result of the increasing number of public Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats (Housing & Development Board, 2017). Therefore, attracting a large number of young couples moving into Punggol. In 2015, it was estimated to have 109,750 residents (Department of Statistics, 2015).
As a young estate, there is a need for community profiling as it helps to identify the community needs (Blackshaw, 2010). Hence, this essay aims to examine the strengths and weaknesses of Punggol by examining the community demographics and the environment.
Community Profile
Age
The age structure distribution of the community has an impact on community health needs (Cagney, 2006). Punggol population pyramid (Fig. 1) shows a significant percentage of residents in the age category between 0-14 and 30-44 years old. Punggol also has the highest number of children below five years old as compared to other estates in Singapore (Singapore Department of Statistics, 2017). Therefore, the statistics suggest that Punggol is made up of young families.
