PRAC 6552 Clinical Skills and Procedures Self-Assessment
PRAC 6552: Clinical Skills and Procedures Self-Assessment Form
Evaluating clinical abilities is crucial for Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students, as it identifies existing competencies and highlights areas that require additional enhancement (Likis & Schuiling, 2022). Organized self-assessment promotes reflective practice, enhances clinical preparedness, and guarantees concentrated learning during practicums. This paper examines my current skills, areas for improvement, and professional objectives. Using the SMART framework, I will set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals to help me improve my skills throughout my practicum.
Clinical Skills and Procedures Self-Assessment Form
Skill / Procedure | Confident (Can complete independently) | Mostly Confident (Can complete with supervision) | Beginning (Has performed with supervision or needs supervision to feel confident) |
New (Has never performed or does not apply) |

Basic microscopy (yeast, BV) | X
Obtaining vaginal culture | X
HARK screening | X | |||
Contraceptive Options | X
Herpes Culture | X | |||
Pap Smear | X | |||

Auscultation Fetal Heart Tones | X
Fundal Height Assessment | X
Pregnancy Testing | X | |||
EPPDS Screening | X | |||
Pelvic Exam | X | |||
Summary of strengths:
My primary strength is executing breast inspections, collecting vaginal cultures, and administering pregnancy tests with precision and assurance. These procedures are fundamental to women’s health and are competencies I have executed autonomously in clinical environments. I am proficient in advising patients on contraceptive options, so I can augment my capacity to deliver comprehensive reproductive health care. My proficiency in evaluating fundal height is an additional strength, enabling me to track the evolution of pregnancy and fetal growth (Woroch & Bockwoldt, 2020). These strengths demonstrate both technical skill and effective communication with patients, ensuring safe, patient-focused care. All of these skills demonstrate that I am ready to provide high-quality professional care, which will help me grow as a Family Nurse Practitioner. |
Growth opportunities:
While I have gained confidence in some areas, there are several procedures for which I necessitate additional instruction and oversight. My experience with pap screenings, IUD installation and removal, and pelvic examinations is limited, despite their necessity for comprehensive gynecologic treatment. Furthermore, I have not yet conducted microscopy for yeast or bacterial vaginosis, nor herpes cultures, which are essential diagnostic instruments in clinical practice. Competencies include fetal heart tone auscultation, HARK screening for intimate partner violence, and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) screening, which continue to be domains with restricted exposure (Beasley, 2021). Enhancing proficiency in these domains will not only strengthen my diagnostic and procedural skills but also enhance my ability to deliver holistic, patient-centered care. Rectifying these deficiencies is crucial for attaining complete proficiency as an FNP. |
Now, write 3–4 possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that they follow the SMART Strategy, as described in the Learning Resources.
1. Goal 1: Enhance proficiency in diagnostic processes related to women’s health.
2. Goal 2: Build confidence in gynecologic procedures.
3. Goal 3: Enhance assessment and screening skills for maternal and mental health. a. Objective 1: Accurately assess fetal heart tones in at least five pregnant patients with preceptor supervision. b. Objective 2: Complete EPPDS screenings with at least three postpartum patients to identify depression risk. c. Objective 3: Implement HARK screening in at least five clinical encounters to strengthen skills in addressing intimate partner violence (Beasley, 2021). |
Conclusion
This clinical skills self-assessment has highlighted my areas of proficiency and underscored procedures that necessitate improvement. Although I am adept in fundamental women’s health assessments, pregnancy testing, and patient education, I require further expertise with specific procedures such as pap smears, pelvic examinations, and IUD management. With the help of my preceptor, I will carefully refine these skills by setting and adhering to SMART goals. This practicum provides me with an excellent opportunity to enhance my nursing skills and foster my growth as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Clinical Skills and Procedures Self-Assessment
Before embarking on any professional or academic activity, it is important to understand the background, knowledge, and experience you bring to it. You might ask yourself “What do I already know? What do I need to know? And what do I want to know?” This critical self-reflection is especially important for developing clinical skills, such as those for advanced practice nursing.
The FNP and the AGPCNP Clinical Skills Lists and Resource Review documents, provided in the Learning Resources, can be used to celebrate your progress throughout your practicum and identify skills gaps. The list covers all necessary skills you should demonstrate during your practicum course.
For this Assignment, you assess where you are now in your clinical skill development and make plans for your practicum. Specifically, you will identify strengths and opportunities for improvement regarding the required practicum skills and procedures.
