The implementation plan for this project entails various components to meet the set project objectives and expected measurable outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to describe the implementation plan of the proposed capstone change project to prevent and control burn wound infections among burn patients in the trauma center at the practicum site, Jacobi Medical Center.

Summary of the Problem

The management of burn wounds is a critical aspect of improving patient safety and quality of care. Wounds have a significant impact on patient care experience, especially the risk for infections (Hu et al., 2023). The issue of focus for this essay is infection prevention and control among burn wound patients. Effective wound management reduces nosocomial infections among burn wound patients, leading to better and higher-quality outcomes.

Proposed Solution                    

The proposed solution to the issue or problem is the development and implementation of a strict sterilization and decontamination of wound dressing equipment and guidelines through an organizational policy. The evaluation of literature shows that sterilization and decontamination measures alongside evidence-based guidelines can prevent and lower the rate of infections among burn wound patients. Findings from Kim et al. (2025), McWilliams et al. (2021), and Mozafari et al. (2024) support the implementation of the proposed measures and protocols that include sterilization and decontamination of dressing equipment and materials. Further, Riza et al. (2025) demonstrate that certain practices and strategies can enhance wound management despite the challenges that wounds present for healthcare providers. Again, Yang et al. (2024) emphasize the importance of nurses having sufficient information to understand the distribution of nosocomial pathogens and antimicrobial resistance among burn wound patients. The article by Odhah et al. (2025) emphasizes the importance of knowledge and practices focused on infection prevention among burn wound patients. The evidence from these articles supports the proposed solution because of the benefits it offers in improving wound care and management.

The proposed solution will enhance nurses’ abilities, competencies, and skills to manage wounds and prevent associated infections like nosocomial infections due to the delicate nature of wounds. Knowledge, practices, and a shared approach to wound care demonstrate the sociocultural and linguistic considerations as nurses will integrate best practices, including applying evidence-based findings and culturally competent care for better patient care delivery and outcomes (Ariyo & Olorunfemi, 2024). The proposed solution affects nursing practice as they should have knowledge, collaborate with patients, and focus on the most appropriate interventions to enhance wound care and management.

Implementing the Nursing Intervention

The project team will implement the proposed change through a systematic process based on the relevant change model, Kotter’s eight-step change process. The initial step in this case will entail creating a sense of urgency for the implementation, followed by building a coalition of change proponents in the facility (Burke & Dempsey, 2022). During these initial steps, the project team will gather requirements and resources, develop a strategic implementation plan and vision, and engage all stakeholders for acceptance of the project to reduce possible resistance. The team will then create an appropriate strategy that would entail training nurse leaders and managers in the unit, who will in turn train nurses to disseminate and implement the proposed solution (Ariyo et al., 2024). The sixth stage will be to determine the effectiveness of the interventions by documenting infections occurring among the initial burn wound patients within two weeks after their admission as an intervention group. The seventh stage would be to implement the proposed intervention in the unit upon successful piloting and positive outcomes, as illustrated through reduced rates of infections, more information and awareness, and a collaborative approach by all healthcare providers through interdisciplinary teams (Riza et al., 2025). The proposed change project will help nurses and other practitioners to provide effective guidelines and implement sterilization and decontamination measures through deliberate policy mandates in the facility to prevent and control infections, including nosocomial infections. The proposed measures enhance the self-determination of all stakeholders as they entail dignified and respectful approaches to infection control and prevention for patients in burn trauma settings.
