Task Description
You are asked to produce a 5,000-word critical essay, presented in the form of a reflective learning journal. The essay should critically engage with the key themes, debates, and readings of the module, while also demonstrating how your own understanding of ‘the humanities’ has developed across the semester. The work should not be a simple diary. Instead, it should be a critically framed reflection: a curated selection of your weekly notes, observations, and insights, shaped into a coherent essay that combines personal engagement with scholarly analysis.
Guidance on Approach
- Keep a weekly journal during the module (e.g. notes on seminars, readings, talks). These will form the raw material of your essay.
- At the end of the module, curate and organize these entries into a structured essay (with introduction, thematic sections, and conclusion).
- The essay should balance: descriptive reflection (your encounters with module content); critical analysis (how these relate to wider debates, theories, and scholarship); and should aim to show how your thinking has developed over time, and how your reflections illuminate the value and role of the humanities today.
- You are advised to include critical engagement/discussion of any of the modules reading, as well as any additional and relevant material you have uncovered during your research.
- You are expected to include a Bibliography, being in this context, a list of works consulted during research (instead of merely works cited).
