This assignment consists of 1 task:

Task: a 900-word essay worth 20%

Due: 22 March 2026, Sunday 2355 hours (Week 10)

This is an individual assignment. You are required to upload a single essay (TMA02) via your respective seminar group site in Canvas. You are responsible for the timely upload of your assignment in Canvas.

TMA02 is an individual assignment consisting of two linked reflection tasks. In Task 1, you are asked to attend an external storytelling activity as an audience member and discuss your experiences as a listener and participant within a specific space and context. In Task 2, you are asked to use the event in Task 1 as a springboard to construct a self-narrative in which you reflect on and critically evaluate your values, beliefs, perspectives and/or relationships in light of a lived experience, and apply what you have learnt about narrative to your telling.

Write a single, 900-word essay (including in-text citations but excluding references). You should, using specific examples to illustrate your answer, do the following:

Task 1: (50 marks)

Discuss the external storytelling activity you attended by answering the following:

  • Explain in brief what your chosen activity is about and identify the medium in which it is presented                                                                           (10 marks)
  • What were your expectations before attending the activity? (You may consider the following in your response: the content, medium and location of the event, your engagement as audience, the audience in general, the context, emotions about the activity.) (10 marks)
  • Discuss your experience of the activity. Did it proceed according to your expectations, or not? In what ways? How did this activity compare with your prior experiences of such activities, if any? (15 marks)
  • Which ideas encountered in the course were most useful or relevant in helping you understand and evaluate your chosen activity? Why? (15 marks)

Task 2: (50 marks)

Write a narrative about yourself in relation to the event that you attended. You can  develop your account using the following prompts:

  • Did you like or dislike the event, or neither? Why?
  • Did the event challenge or reinforce your world views, perceptions, bias, understanding of official or current narratives?
  • Did it change or reinforce the way you think about your relationship with society, family, race, community, religion, class, education, gender or success (or other relevant areas of your life)?
  • How do the ideas you discuss in Task 1 connect to your self-narrative in Task 2?

(Important to note: The prompts are meant to stimulate your thinking. You are not expected to respond to all of them. In particular, the third prompt serves as a reminder of various areas of your life, rather than as an exhaustive list to cover in your response. Pick what resonates the most with you.)   (50 marks)

Notes to students

1. For Task 1, there will be various activities to choose from. We will be updating about these on the LG NCO103 Announcements page. Activities for completing Task 1 include:

  • Events curated for the NCO103 module
  • External events happening around Singapore which we will suggest to you
  • You may also pick an appropriate storytelling activity from the following site or similar sites: https://www.catch.sg/Event
  • An event you have attended live and no earlier than December 2025, after consultation with your instructor.

If you choose the same activity for TMA02 that you have already chosen in TMA01, there will be a mark penalty.

2. Provide proper in-text citations and references for all sources you may have used. Any format (MLA, APA, CMS etc) is fine as long as you are consistent.

3. Please note that all deadlines are non-negotiable.

4. Your essay should not exceed 900 words. There is no 10% allowance in excess of 900 words.

5. All submissions must be of original work. Materials taken from other sources (e.g., film/sound clips, AI generative statements and images, illustrations, texts, etc.) should be acknowledged and cited in in-text citations, references and an appendix (if necessary).
