Benefits of Reverse Logistics for the Environment

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to examine the benefits of Reverse logistics and sustainability on the environment. The questionnaire was made and distributed among the workers of the Dasani Company, which is operating in the United States. The sample of the study consisted of 400 workers who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. The findings indicated that the benefits of reverse logistics and sustainability exceeded the disadvantages that come along. Several conclusions have been made, along with summary and future research recommendations. Using reverse logistics benefits the company as well as the environment.

Introduction

Over the past decade, there have been several attempts to make products and materials that are reusable to organizations and companies. The main aim for reverse logistics has been to create a sustainable environment free from pollution and help utilize available resources. Most companies have succeeded in creating products and services that are sustainable-meaning products and services which meet human expectations without harming the present and future generations.

Background

Reverse logistics involves moving products and materials from the end consumers back to the warehouse or any stage within the supply chain. It mostly deals with return management, refurbishing or remanufacturing of products. In the early 19th century, companies were looking at becoming more sustainable to the environment and ensuring that there is no wastage of resources available. In 1960, the invention of reverse logistics emerged, was tested by a few companies and proved to be a success to the environment and the company (Hawkins 2017).

Literature Review

Reverse logistics has made organizations and companies have more interest due to the values it has proved to provide. As seen from the article C3Controls, several highlighted examples show reverse logistics such as the reuse of packaging, refurbishing goods, return of goods by customers, recycling of end-of-life goods, and selling of goods in the secondary market in response to overstocking.

Findings

From the questionnaire carried out in Dasani Company, 350 participants agreed that reverse logistics had played a greater role in the company and the environment. The participants added that before the use of reverse logistics, the company used a lot of cost in purchasing the materials that would be used in manufacturing products. The remaining 50 participants argued that they did not see any changes with or without the reverse logistical (Kiser 2020).

Conclusion

From the findings, it’s accurate to conclude that reverse logistics are beneficial to companies and the environment. When reverse logistics is utilized well in an organization, it will improve the productivity in supply chain operation since it optimizes product traffic in the two directions. The other benefit of reverse logistics is that it lowers the cost that can be used on acquiring resources since the resources used are recycled and reused from old products, hence reducing the time used to purchase the new products. Also, reverse logistics is a strategy that has been used by companies for the sustainability of the environment and hence reduces pollution.

Summary

In summary, the study focused more on the benefits of reverse logistics. Through the questionnaires distributed among the workers of the Dasani Company, which is operating in the United States, the discovery that was made is that Dasani Company has benefited greatly from the use of reverse logistics in the company. Also, there has been environmental sustainability since the implementation of reverse logistics (Pacheco et al., 2018).

Future Research Recommendation

While a lot of examination has been done on the benefits of reverse logistics, future research on the effects of reverse logistics needs to be done. Also, with the growing population, the resources needed for products are scarce as days pass; hence, a more effective manner needs to be invented on how reverse logistics can yield maximum benefits both to the organizations and the environment.
