Interview Discussion Guide: What are the goals of the agency? I started

Interview Discussion Guide:

What are the goals of the agency?

I started this group private practice to provide a supportive environment for newer clinicians. The goal is have a safe place to grow clinical skills and develop a niche in their passion in the field.

What is the target population?

Target population varies based on the specialties of the clinicians. We accept pts of all ages and of a variety of issues. We do not accept the chronically mentally ill like schizophrenia and psychotic disorders.

What is the agency’s chief sources of funding?

Insurance and private pay.

Does the agency regularly partner with other agencies/entities? If yes, who are these

partners?

No- but we have contacts at the local Mental Health Agency who often refers pts that they cannot service. We also work with local school social workers and hospital social workers to accept pt referrals.

How many social workers does the agency employ?

Currently we have 5 part time therapists, the owner/therapist, 2 interns and one practice Manager.

How did you find yourself in your current position?

After being in the field since 1991 and doing various jobs in foster care, residential, crisis work and Employee Assistance- I was ready for a change. I was laid off twice in 4 years and I felt I needed to take charge of my own career. I opened an single private practice. In 2015 and expanded to this group practice in 2021.

What aspects of your job do you enjoy?

I enjoy having autonomy. I enjoy working with newer clinicians as they grow their clinical skills. My favorite population to work with is couples.

What are the challenges/difficulties with your current position?

The challenges come with managing my time. I see clients, work part time at a hospital, and have to provide ongoing supervision as well as assure all aspects of the business stay intact (ie credentialing, billing- etc). It is often challenging making sure everyone gets what they need- clients, staff and interns.

If I am considering a position in social work, what do you I need to know?

There are many different things you can do as a social worker. Do not be afraid to explore different areas of practice until you find your passion. Continue to explore clinical interventions and allow your creativity to shine. Also, because we are dealing with people, make sure you learn early to create a healthy work-life balance. Nurture yourself as we encourage our clients to do. Also, I always say “A good therapist needs a good therapist!”.

In regards to your specific field/position, what do I need to know?

Your most valuable tool is your ears- listen to what your pts are saying and meet them where they are. Again, make sure you have your own self-care rituals and outlets as sometimes hearing peoples life stories day after day can drain you emotionally. Set good boundaries and understand that if you are working harder than your pts then you are not doing your job.

What best helped you prepare for a career in social work?

Life experiences made me want to be a social worker. On those days I felt alone I knew I wanted to assist others in dealing with their life challenges. Also, I am an ongoing learner and I take all things I learn along the way and use them as needed. This is like building an ongoing tool box. Also, I am always open to feedback and growth. Everything we do in our career is preparing us for our next step and our final career destination.
