GLOBAL RESEARCH TOPIC

This course will cover many complex social issues that are global and multicultural in nature. In this assignment, you will identify an issue you would like to explore (or come up with a solution for). For instance, do you have an interest in the global/multicultural issues pertaining to a particular discipline or a social issue (e.g., gun control, health care, world hunger, environmental concerns, education)? What do you already know about the topic? Additionally, why are you interested in learning more about this particular topic? It is a requirement that this paper be interdisciplinary. Although, the Repko and Szostak text noted as a recommended source in the syllabus would be helpful to guide you, it is not required that you purchase this text. In 3-5 pages of content for the body of the paper, you should discuss your global perspectives research topic. The paper should be in current APA style, double-spaced, with 1 in. margins and Times New Roman, 12 pt. font. Proper spelling and grammar will be expected in the paper. The paper should include a title page and references page; these pages do not count toward the total page count. Students should take care to use the headings identified below. *Note: Be sure to choose a topic in which you have a strong interest, as this assignment will become a part of your final research project.

Research Interest Identification (300 Words).  In this section, you are to clearly identify a global/multicultural research interest about which you would like to learn more. Some examples of interest areas are those pertaining to a particular discipline or a social issue. Discuss why this is an area of particular interest to you. You only have 300 words for this section, so be specific and clear. Some of you will not be familiar with global issues; if you are not familiar with global issues, you might spend some research time skimming the national news sources or commondreams.org to see what topics are relevant to the world today.

Complex Problem (500 Words).  In this section, you will discuss the interdisciplinary nature of the area of interest. Discuss the reasons why this area is one of global/multicultural concern. What are the parts of the issue/problem that make it complex? What disciplinary perspectives might be helpful in researching the problem? You should clearly identify at least 2, but no more than 3, disciplinary perspectives and discuss why they are important. You are not required to use your areas of concentration. Please be succinct in this section.

Conclusion (150 Words).  In this section I want you to be precise in summarizing the area of interest, its interdisciplinary and global nature, and one potential solution to the problem.

Focus Group Question. Provide a list of at least 15 questions you intend on asking your focus group (focus group is for the next paper) as it relates to this problem.

You need to start thinking ahead to your final paper. You should notice that you will build on your original topic from this paper in each paper hereafter. In Paper 1, you are introducing your topic. In Paper 2, you are conducting a focus group to explore perspectives on your topic from a wide range of individuals. In Paper 3, you are discussing issues of inequality and conflict. In the final paper, you will revise and add to your project by discussing disciplinary conflict and developing common ground. The final paper should be a synthesis of what you have learned this term, providing an interdisciplinary perspective of the problem and potential solutions.

Please note: Your grade on the Global Research Interest Assignment depends on the manner in which you address each of the aforementioned dimensions. Each review should be no more than five pages, double-spaced (not including the title page and references page).

You will be required to create a title page and a references page, which properly lists the sources of any information you may have cited in the body of the paper. Both should be formatted according to current APA style. Please note that an Abstract section in not required and should not be included. The assignment should be created and submitted in a Microsoft Word document through the appropriate Blackboard assignment drop box. No other submissions are allowed.
