KIMBERLY SAID    I think as Christians, it is important to understand the bible as it was written .  We should want to understand the historical context of the bible to better understand what was going on at that time . We Understanding the historical context of the biblical text will also help us to develop our faith and connect with God on a deeper level.  

      Source criticism is a very important method that is used because it investigates the different sources that were used in the bible. Source criticism gave birth to the idea of the two source hypothesis which is pretty important because it gave us more information about what order the gospels were written in and introduced the idea of a source called Q.   One weakness of source criticism is that some of the sources cannot be verified because they do not exist anymore. Form criticism is another important method used. It is so important because it can explain relationships, names, ceremonies or rituals, or geology.  

    Form criticism is very important because it gives a good idea of what is going on at the time it was written. It looks at the context of the passage to find out the sources behind what is written.  The weakness of this, is that although you can research, it is impossible to know for sure if you have gotten the context correct, it is not an exact science.

Interpreting The Bible

   The value of historical-cultural approaches to Scripture is that it allows you to see that each word of the Bible was written in a certain point in history. It also gives new insights into why the passage was significant to the original audience and also the main purpose of why that book of the Bible was written. The first method is the Historical Criticism method and it uses the metaphor of a house to identify the Historical Context of any book of the Bible. The strengths of this method is that gives us insights into the biblical text like who wrote it, the Biblical audience, and other elements of the text. The weakness is that it does not give attention to the real author like the letters of the apostle Paul and there is different competing traditions even when it comes to the New Testament. The second method is the Literary-critical method and it is the study and interpretation of the Literary text as a whole. The strengths of the Literary critical method is that the goal is to understand the text itself and more interested in the response of the reader. The weaknesses is that it does not study the composition of the text to it’s final form and does not reconstruct what the text points to.
