MARKING SCHEME – CASE ANALYSIS
Total Page Requirement: Approximately 10 pages including executive summary. Additional attachments are not counted towards your 10 pages. This does not include cover page, table of contents or reference page (if needed). Calibri 11” font, 1” margins, 1.5 line spacing.
Please note: The recommended pages are not set in stone. It all depends on what you do with the case. At the very least, a question worth 5% would require less effort and writing than something worth 20%.
Executive summary: This is a concisely written report. It briefly summarizes the major points of the case and your solution. It should describe the major issue, the proposed solution and the logic supporting the solution. It will be about 1 page, using 1.5 line spacing. 10 marks
Problem statement. Present the central issue(s) or major problem(s) in your case here. Do not rehash the facts of the case; assume that anyone reading the report is familiar with the case. No more than a paragraph. 5 marks
Issues: Present the relevant issues in the case. This should be between 3-4 pages. 25 marks
Alternatives: Discuss all relevant alternatives. Briefly present the major arguments for and against each alternative (pros and cons). Please consider what criterion you are using to determine which alternatives are suitable for your analysis. Be sure to state your assumptions and the impact of constraints on each alternative. This should be between 1 and 2 pages. 25 marks
Recommendations. Present the analysis and the logic (criterion) that led you to select a particular solution. Also discuss the reasons you rejected the other alternatives. This may be between 1 and 2 pages. 20 marks
Implementation. Outline a plan of action that will lead to effective implementation for the decision so that the reader can see not only why you chose a particular alternative but how it will work. Be sure to implement short and long term solutions. This will be about 1 page. 5 marks
Evaluation: Discuss the appropriate measures to ensure that implementation can be followed up effectively. This will probably not be more than .5 to 1 page. 5 marks
Proof-reading: You are expected to proof-read your work for spelling and grammar. Your work should be well written and follow a logical flow. Must read in one voice!! 5 marks.
Other Considerations
Do you adequately understand the facts in the case? Did you read the case carefully enough to identify the important aspects of the organization’s internal and external circumstances?
Have you appropriately determined the problem(s)/issue(s)?
Is your analysis deep enough? Does your analysis go into sufficient depth to identify and deal with the critical issues, or is your analysis superficial and trivial?
Have you used theories and concepts from this (and other) classes in making your analysis? Are you trying to get by on your intuition and common sense alone or can you use theories, research, and concepts from the human resources literature to improve your analysis?
Have you used the information in the case creatively? Have you integrated different pieces of information in the case to come up with new insights into the situation, or have you merely followed a formula and repeated what was already stated in the case? “Creativity” does not mean all answers are correct. It means, “Given that you correctly understand and communicate the key issues in the case, you provide insights that are not simply a repeat of information in the case.”
Have you presented your analysis and recommendations in a literate and effective manner? Is your report well written and does it communicate clearly?
Is the implementation reasonable?
