HLTR 310: Research Methods
The PICO Model: Elements of a Well-Framed Clinical Question
Well-framed clinical questions contain the following components:
P – the Patient or Problem addressed
I – the Intervention under study
C – a Comparison intervention
O – the clinical Outcome of interest
Please identify each of the following components of your clinical question:
Patient or Problem – Describe as specifically as possible the patient or problem type (including age, diagnosis, co-morbidities, etc as relevant). For example, “ In male and female patients over the age of 40 who have been diagnosed with arthritis…”
Intervention – Describe some exposure to a treatment, a cause, a prognostic factor, or diagnostic test. For example, “…would use of a copper bracelet…”
Comparison – Describe an alternative intervention (can include standard treatment or no treatment). For example, “…in addition to standard therapy and treatment…”
Outcome – Describe the results of the intervention or exposure. For example, …result is decreased subjective pain, as reported on a 0-10 visual analog scale?”
