Foundations of Nursing  Assignment Guidance

This module will be assessed though a 4000-word written assignment. You will

• Write an evidence-based description of care for a fictional patient introduced within the module. This will include communication strategies and interprofessional collaboration.
• Discuss the importance of professionalism when caring for their patient.
• Explain the physiology of one of the vital signs relating to their patient.

 There are 3 sections in the assessment, but you present it as one piece of work.Formatting:

• You must include a front sheet and evidence of special arrangements if applicable.
• Work should be presented with 1.5 line spacing.
• Font: Calibri size 12.
• Use subheadings to structure your content.
• Pages should be numbered consecutively.
• Structure of assignment:

Introduction: (3^rd person) 100 words

This should be a brief paragraph to explain what you plan to include in your piece of work. Remember to include a consent and confidentiality statement. For example:

“In the consideration of confidentiality fictional characters have been used for this piece of work (NMC, 2018).”

Assessment and Plan of Care: (1^st person) 1900 words

Consider the Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) for Violet Smith. Identify 3 of her needs from your assessment (practiced in your seminar using an assessment template) and discuss what evidence-based care you plan to implement for her. Remember to consider Person/Family-Centred Care in your plan and include communication strategies and interprofessional collaboration opportunities.

Integrate existing research and literature to underpin your content, following the Harvard referencing technique.

The Physiology: 500 Words

Here you should explain the normal physiology of ONE of the vital signs and normal parameters. 

• Pulse OR temperature OR blood pressure OR respiratory rate

What happens in the body to maintain homeostasis? Explain clearly and in detail. Do not include the practical process of how to measure your chosen vital sign.

Professionalism : (1^st person) 1400 Words

In this section you should refer to the key texts that you have been introduced to you through the course of the module for example; The NMC Code or the NHS Constitution.  Demonstrate your understanding of the nursing profession and the responsibility and accountability that comes with the role.

Don’t just describe what you think a profession/professional is. Give examples of what you have done/will do in your practice to promote professionalism.

Link your content to your care of Violet Smith and give rationales for the care you provide.   

Conclusion: (1^st person)

“In conclusion….” –  Write one statement that reiterates the purpose of the assignment. Summarise key points. Do not introduce any new material.
