The global health issue I chose for this discussion is child neglect and abuse. As stated in CDC website, “Child abuse and neglect are complex problems rooted in unhealthy relationships and environments” (2020). According to the World Health Organization, “Nearly 3 in 4 children – or 300 million children – aged 2–4 years regularly suffer physical punishment and/or psychological violence at the hands of parents and caregivers” By assessing the causes of child neglect and abuse one can formulate an intervention and plan to minimize or decrease the occurrences of it. CDC has determined 5 strategies to effectively prevent child abuse and neglect. First strategy is to strengthen financial support in families with family-friendly work policies. Second strategy is to support parents and positive parenting by public engagement and education. Third is to provide quality care and education early in life by providing preschool enrichment with family engagement and improved quality of child care through licensing and accreditation. Fourth strategy is to enhance parenting skills by providing early childhood home visitations. Lastly, intervene to lessen harm and prevent future risk by enhancing primary care, treatment to lessen harms of abuse and neglect exposure, and prevent problem behavior and later involvement in violence (CDC, 2021). In addition to these strategies, education on signs of child abuse and neglect should be taught to teachers, social workers, nurses, daycare providers, and first responders. These individuals could make a great impact on preventing child abuse and neglect. Furthermore who to contact once abuse and neglect are suspected. By educating these individuals properly, early detection can avoid long term abuse and neglect. By refining the system on how child abuse and neglect cases are handled within the child protective services, famous cases like Omaree Varela and Gabriel Fernandez would not be an issue because they would still be alive.
