Personal Statement
Over the past few years, I have explored my study interest in both academic study and practical work, during which I have realized the importance of business analytics and confirmed my objective to pursue higher studies in this area. Wherever taking courses in the Risk Management and Insurance program at St. John’s University, exchanging at Swiss Re in Switzerland, or working in FWD Group, I have been exposed to the great impact of big data to the business area. Gradually, my desire to pursue higher studies in related field becomes stronger, and I choose the Chinese University of Hong Kong as my top preference.
In my undergraduate program, I chose my minor as Business Analytics. A series of data and analytics related courses have prepared me well. For example, Modern Statistics has helped me lay a foundation in statistics; the course Introduction to Business Analytics has enabled me to gain an understanding of the theories of analytics and master how to use Excel functions to complete pivot charts; through Big Data & Data Mining for Business, I have learned some basic coding and the programming language Python; and after taking Database Management, I have developed insight into the basic principles and operations of SQL. My excellent academic performance can be proven by various honors such as Summa Cum Laude and Dean’s List.
Practically, I have four internship and work experiences, respectively at Zhejiang University of Technology, Sogou, FWD Group and ISoftStone. At FWD Group, an insurance and technology company, I served as a Project Management Officer (PMO), responsible for utilizing Jira to observe data and analyze the project efficiency and using Excel to make PivotTable. In my current job at ISoftStone Inc., I was outsourced to the HSBC Software Development as a service provider. In the process of cooperating with the British and Indian team of HSBC, I contribute to the completion of international procurement and contract signing. Over the past few months, I have been praised by my managers and colleagues for several times, encouraging me greatly to become a formal employee of the company. During my work, I also note that a candidate with business analytical skill and coding skill is strongly preferred.
The master’s degree program aims to equip learners with statistical tools and coding skills that constitute the basis for exploration and investigating mass data, based on which I can make predictions about market changes and make strategic decisions. And the course Business Intelligence Techniques and Applications especially intrigued me. In terms of plans, I will combine my undergraduate studies with the curriculum of the master program and concentrate more on the application of data. After graduation, I aim to join HSBC as a business analyst, a company where I can apply my newly acquired knowledge and skills into practice. In five years, I see myself become a business manager who can lead a team independently. The study experience in this program will be an essential step for me to move towards career success, and your favorable consideration will be appreciated.
