1. All cultures have certain ideas, beliefs and expectations in regard to age and aging. What are some of the differences and similarities in the ways people see and treat their elderly in different countries? What particular aspects of aging and elderly life can be interpreted differently in different cultures? What social factors affect these differences in conceptualization of old age? Please give at least three examples from our readings for this class.

2. In the US, a significant part of the elderly population is placed into nursing homes. Our readings for this class suggest that there are certain problems associated with this arrangement. Please explain what these problems are and how they affect the elderly and our society at large. Please list some alternatives to this arrangement in other cultures. What social factors make them see aging and the aged differently?

3. What is ageism? How does it relate to other forms of discrimination? How are ageist stereotypes produced, spread and consumed in contemporary societies? What are the main factors and agents that contribute to reinforcing and reproducing ageism in our society? What can be done to prevent this kind of oppression from happening? Please list a few examples from our class readings
