The paper should discuss the problem outlined in the chapter, give current statistics and in addition to discussing the intervention and prevention strategies in the text, the student should include addition strategies and resources that would apply to students in their area of practice. For example, consideration should be given to the school systems, geographical area, student sees and ethnicity that you will foresee yourself working with in the future.  This paper should end with a position statement on the topic at hand. For example, do you believe school counselors should deal with this problem in schools and do you agree on ASCA’s position in what school counselors should do to address the problem and if not, what are your suggestions. Paper should be 3-5 pages.

School counselors recognize the school experience can be significantly more difficult for students with marginalized identities. School counselors work to eliminate barriers impeding LGBTQ student development and achievement.

The Rationale

Despite widespread efforts, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) students continue to face challenges that threaten their academic and social/emotional development in schools. Student’s report feeling unsafe in school due to their sexual orientation, perceived orientation, gender identity or gender expression and report experiencing homophobic remarks, harassment, and bullying (GLSEN, 2012). LGBTQ individuals often face multiple risk factors that may place them at greater risk for suicidal behavior (CDC, 2011). School counselors realize these issues affect healthy student development and psychological well-being.
