The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) is a nursing organization composed of more than 13,000 medical-surgical specialty nurses dedicated to providing quality patient care through professional development, certification, scholarship, and advocacy. This specialty is the largest nursing specialty in the United States as it offers nurses a broad knowledge and great foundation in their clinical practice. Medical-Surgical is a versatile specialty that is practiced in various healthcare settings, encouraging nurses to obtain and enhance a wide range of skills and experiences. This organization’s core values include dedication to the nurses’ and their patients’ well-being, transformation in all aspects of the medical-surgical nursing, collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, other nursing specialties, and stakeholders, and advocacy for the nurses and their patients. As someone who works in the medical-surgical field, my values align with the mentioned nursing organization. As a new nurse, it is reassuring to know that there are organizations committed to improving safe patient care and addressing concerns that the nurses may have with their clinical practice. The specialty certification is available to the members and nonmembers of this organization, offering a discount for its members. Once I have finished my 2 years of clinical experience, I plan to join and obtain the specialty certification through this organization.

ANA Code of Ethics Provision 1

The Code of Ethics for nurses Provision 1 states the duty of nurses to exhibit compassionate care and respect to patients as an essential part of nursing practice regardless of race, gender, socioeconomic status, age, ethnicity, and other factors (). Nurses provide compassionate care by building trusting and respectful relationships with their patients, maintaining their dignity, and advocating for them without bias or judgement. It is important to recognize that each individual is different and has various beliefs and values that should be considered when providing care to achieve their optimal health. Patient care is not limited to performing tasks and addressing superficial issues, but extends to the psychological aspects and overall well being of an individual.

The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses association demonstrates their support for diversity, equity, and inclusion by taking stands and pledges on current issues, and advocating for the good of every member of the community. The organization have released statements expressing the need for acknowledgement and demanding actions regarding antiracism, discrimination to LGBTQ community, violence, and more. An example is their effort to fight racism, especially in healthcare by encouraging nurses and members of the community to take a pledge on antiracism linked on their website available for everyone to access. Health disparities regarding race/ethnicity remain prevalent in society and certainly calls for action from institutions, politicians, and citizens. Recent devastating events such as the police killings of Black Americans like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor reveal the persistence of structural racism and its impact on the community.

ANA Code of Ethics Provision 4

The ANA Code of Ethics Provision 4 discusses the responsibility of nurses to take accountability for their own nursing practice and their acquired authority to take actions aiming to promote optimal health (). Providing patient care is a delicate and highly complex responsibility requiring nurses to obtain knowledge about evidence-based practices and research, as well as competency in clinical skills in order to ensure safe and efficient care. Nurses must be able to determine critical judgments and maintain accountability for their own actions. Furthermore, nurses are to comply with the healthcare facility’s policies, state nurse practice acts, regulations, and standards of care, and the ANA Code of Ethics ().

The AMSN addressed this provision by providing leadership advancement opportunities for medical-surgical nurses, including “engagement on the multidisciplinary Nurses on Boards Coalition, clinical and professional leadership development education and training, the Nightingale Challenge initiative for early career nurses, and advanced voluntary certifications through the affiliated Medical-Surgical Nurses Certification Board” (). An example of the opportunities available is the Clinical Practice Award, where nurses can be nominated if they acquire the eligibility requirements such as minimum of 3 years in medical-surgical nursing, an AMSN member in good standing for at least 1 year, primary role includes provision of direct patient care, and serves as a role for colleagues (). Healthcare Legislation & Policy

Healthcare legislation and policy plays a crucial role when protecting and advocating for nurses’ rights and workplace safety. One of the current greatest challenges is the COVID 19 pandemic causing complicated struggles, especially for nurses and the healthcare system, requiring immediate attention. With the ongoing and rising number of cases, healthcare professionals are getting exhausted and burned out physically, mentally, and emotionally. They are continuously being exposed to the risk of getting the virus, causing significant anxiety. Therefore, it is of the essence to take action and advocate for the nurses’ safety. The AMSN wrote a letter to the legislator in support of the Make Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in America Act, which “sends a clear demand signal to U.S. manufacturers by authorizing federal procurement of PPE over at least two years” (). PPE’s are necessary in maintaining safety when providing patient care. This act was introduced in response to the U.S. being dependent on overseas suppliers for PPEs, which can delay and compromise the safety of healthcare workers.ADD SCHOLAR ARTICLE

Professional Advocacy

The AMSN advocate for the advancement of the nursing profession by supporting the work of National Academy of Nursing (NAM), aiming to “extend the vision for the nursing profession into 2030 and chart a path for the nursing profession to help our nation create a culture of health, reduce health disparities, and improve the health and well-being of the U.S” (). The nursing profession is a continuous learning process, involving informational, clinical, and technological advancements. Therefore, it is imperative for nurses to remain updated and further their knowledge regarding these innovations in order to utilize them properly and provide high quality patient care. Achieving Diversity & Meaningful Inclusion in the Profession of Nursing

Diversity and inclusion in nursing and healthcare is important to avoid discrimination to minority groups and promote equal treatment for each individual. Racial and ethnic disparities remain persistent in the healthcare system, with studies showing decreased access to preventive care and treatment for chronic conditions leading to poor health outcomes, increased hospitalizations, and likelihood of developing heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and mental illness (Nair & Adetayo, 2019). Some of the challenges that contribute to this problem include cultural incompetency and underrepresentation of minority groups in the workplace.
