Project Three English 1100 The assignment: For this assignment you’re going to

Project Three English 1100

The assignment: For this assignment you’re going to research a community that you are part of and explain the demographics of the community, why the community is important, and any issues facing the community at the current time. Since you have to explore all of these categories, be sure you choose a community that can support these questions. (i.e. don’t choose a community that isn’t facing any issues.) You will then write a 2,000 word (8 pages double spaced) essay exploring and explaining this community, using at least three credible outside sources and in proper MLA or APA documentation format.

Due Dates: November 8th – Brainstorming

November 15th – Outline & Preliminary Source List

November 22nd – Rough Draft

December 13th – Final Draft

Audience: Your classmates (i.e. other college students)

Purpose: To explain the makeup of a community, the importance of the community, and any issues facing the community

Steps:

Identify a community that is important to you. Consider geographical community, hobby communities, school communities, work communities, religious communities, political communities, etc.

Here is a definition of community (beyond geography): “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.”

Communities can be online, in-person, long-distance, households, etc.

You decide how you want to define community – as long as that idea is clear in your essay, I’m flexible

Complete the brainstorming activity by November 8th

Complete a structured outline and preliminary source list by November 15th

An outline is a plan for your essay, a skeleton. You will use roman numerals and letters to create your outline, and you will be as thorough and specific in your outline as possible. You will not write things like “Topic Sentence Paragraph One” but rather you will write the topic sentence for paragraph one. I will provide an example of a strong outline.

Your source list will be formatted properly as a Works Cited (MLA) or Reference (APA) page and will have at least three and no more than five sources on it. These will be credible sources. I suggest using the CSCC Library website under “Find Books and Articles” and then “Databases” and then “Academic Search Complete.” This is a database that your fees help support and guarantees credible sources. You will have to read each source that you use – not just search for one or two quotes.

Write a complete Rough Draft by November 22nd

Complete Revisions and hand in a Final Draft by December 13th

Requirements:

Clear thesis statement in your introduction

Clear paragraph organization with topic sentences, supporting details, source support, and concluding sentences

Strong use of sources. This means leading into your source, citing it properly, and explaining why what you used supports your topic sentence of your paragraph.

Strong grammar and mechanics

Formal tone – no use of the pronoun “I”

In-text citations when you use sources, following proper MLA OR APA format (pick one and stick with it!)

A properly formatted Works Cited (MLA) or References (APA) page

Use of at least three and no more than five sources without plagiarism

Exploring the demographics of the community, the importance of the community, and any issues facing the community right now
