Assignment 2: 1500-word case study report

Deadline: Friday 13th August, 2021 4pm, on Canvas, via Turnitin

Psychological Report: Fred West / Peter Sutcliffe

(Please ensure that you submit your case study report based on the offender that you have not previously submitted in your first attempt. If you have not previously attempted this piece of work, you can choose from either offender).

Please follow the following format for the writing of your report.

Assignment Format:

Title Page: containing the essay title above, your name, your affiliation (University of Sunderland, Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing, School of Psychology), the name of your programme, module code and title, the date of submission and word count;

Report Purpose: you should contain a brief overview of the purpose of your report in order to provide a context for your reader;

Background and Theoretical Understanding of Offender: this section should apply a theoretical understanding to the history and circumstances of the crime. You should only include psychological literature and details of the case study that you feel are relevant to your report;

Psychological Risk Assessment: your report should contain details of how a risk assessment may have been conducted in your case study and what particular factors may be high/low risk to further offending (please note, you are not expected to actually conduct a risk assessment);

Recommendations: you should indicate what type of treatment may be suitable for your case study and why;

Conclusion: this should not only summarise the key points in your essay, but provide a coherent conclusion in relation to the whole of your report;

The assignment should be formatted to Times New Roman, font size 12, with double line spacing. Pages should be numbered;

The assignment should include references in text and a reference list at the end. Please use APA style for all of your references; guidance is available at Citations and Referencing Guide (Psychology);

This assignment counts for 50% of your module mark and assesses the following learning outcomes:

K1. The ability to explain major concepts and debates in Forensic Psychology;

K2. The ability to describe the various professionals that comprise the forensic sciences and identify their roles; with particular emphasis on the contribution of psychology to understanding criminal behaviour.

S1. The ability to review and evaluate research relevant to the role of psychological variables in criminal behaviour;

S2. The ability to report in appropriate conventions how psychological theories address well-defined criminal problems, with consideration of the complexities and ethical issues involved in this.

Please make sure your work meets these learning outcomes.

This assignment relates to material covered throughout your classes such as ‘Theories of Offending’, ‘Offender Typology’, ‘Offender Risk Assessment’, and ‘Assessment and Treatment’. This should be your starting point but you are expected to complete further reading.
