The healthcare system is an organization of institutions, people and resources that deliver plans and services to meet a target populations health needs. After interviewing with both a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a health care unit and a server at a local restaurant it was evident how the different perceptions and opinions were of the healthcare system.
The CEO viewed the US healthcare system as a financial business. Most developed countries like the US and Canada have similarities in factors affecting the healthcare systems. Including price control of services, types of equipment used, inequality among different classes of people and the different levels of education of the people. These factors determine the access, cost and quality of services provided by the healthcare systems (Shi & Singh, 2019). Both the US and other countries have a single-payer system. This is used in healthcare systems that the government prefers to cater for medical bills.
The server views the US healthcare system as a life-line for her medical needs. In the US, there are higher rates of hospital admissions for preventable conditions as well as high costs for medical treatments and medications. This leads to high spending of the nation per capita. Other countries, have a lower percentage of hospital admissions that leads to minimal spending per capita (Minas et al., 2021). The US healthcare system is covered by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that serves the low-income and aged populations. The interviewed server depends on the ACA for all of her medical coverage as her employer does not offer company insurance. Medicare is taxpayer-funded by the public insurer that pays the providers to care for the senior citizens in the country (Bhaduri, 2020). Medicaid is a similar program used for low-income households and is found only in the US.
In conclusion, both interviewed parties agree that there are major implementations to be made in the healthcare system sector to improve productivity and access to all classes of people in the US. Some of these factors include providing nutrition programs, education and prevention of chronic diseases and conducting community-based partnerships. This will involve both the everyday citizen and healthcare leaders to strategizing together for the success of the healthcare system.

The question was asked to a non-nursing leader colleague in health care. Kerri responded, “The U.S. is very lucky on how fast we can get treated when there is a health issue that arises. If you make an appointment in Canada for a doctor, it could take up to a year to get an appointment. I think the average time is about a year at the least. You could potentially die waiting on your first appointment. Canadians covers everybody for their insurance. It is kind of like a first come first serve basis. In the U.S. you can simply just call or go online to make an appointment. In Canada you must jump through a lot of hoops to receive healthcare. The aspect that is most needed in the U.S. healthcare is the insurance premiums are too high. Making it to where people can`t get afford their healthcare.” The same question was repeated to someone who is not in the healthcare field. Gage responded, “I believe that the best aspect of the US healthcare system is that everyone can be treated regardless of their insurance status. Conversely, I believe insurance is also one of the biggest problems. There is too much ‘red-tape’ involved because of insurance. A doctor will order certain labs or procedures done, but then the insurance will deny it because they view labs/procedures as not medically necessary. I apologize, but my doctor’s medical degree trumps the insurance claims analyst’s two weeks of training.”
Kerri and Gage`s responses are two great points when it comes to healthcare in the U.S. Kerri pointed out how U.S. citizens can see a physician when a problem arises quickly, and Gage believes the best aspect of the U.S. healthcare is that regardless of the insurance status of a patient, they can still be treated. They both agreed that insurance seem to be the biggest downfall in the United States Healthcare. “An acceptable health care delivery system should have two primary objectives: 1 enable all citizens to obtain needed healthcare services; and 2 ensure that services are cost-effective and meet certain established standards or quality” (Shi & Singh, 2019). The United States falls short of these basics’ objectives, but it does provide the best in medical technology, training, and research. The United States has a lot of barriers in place for all the population to be able to afford insurance.

Discussion 1: Best Practice of US Health Care System
John, an advanced nurse practitioner, believes the best aspect of US healthcare is evidence-based practices, where health practitioners are encouraged to utilize a holistic approach to meet patient needs (J.T., personal conversation, August 20, 20201). Healthcare providers have been encouraged to attain the highest level of education to enhance evidence-based practice to quality care that improves patient outcomes (Hsieh & Chen, 2020). Some of the best practices that have been applied in healthcare are awareness to the people on issues such as responsible sexual behavior, substance abuse and the need for immunizations. John highlighted that evidence-based practice had been key in health promotion as providers fully engage patients in most instances while providing healthcare services. Similarly, Mary, a teacher, agrees the current US health system is delivering quality care and enhancing adequate patient outcomes (M.M., personal conversation, August 20, 2021). Mary noted the healthcare system had adopted measures such as community sensitization and education to improve public health. Additionally, the healthcare system has encouraged a large population to access healthcare to seek medical services. The healthcare system uses a holistic approach while providing care to patients to improve the quality of life of patients (Shi & Singh, 2019). This ensures patients are satisfied with the care they receive during and after accessing healthcare.
Regarding the aspect most needing improvement, John perceived the need for additional human resources and medical equipment to meet the needs of the rising population seeking medical care. There is a rise in the number of people seeking medical service in the US due to the increasing number of older adults frequently seeking medical assistance. By 2030, a larger population of people in the US will be 65 years old and over (Fulmer et al., 2021). This data indicates there will be a higher demand for healthcare services in the US; hence an urgent requirement to increase healthcare resources to ensure the healthcare system is not overwhelmed. On the contrary, Mary suggested the healthcare aspect most needing improvement is the cost associated with obtaining health services. Despite advances by the government breaking barriers preventing individuals from accessing healthcare, the high cost of care remains a significant barrier to access care in the US. The Affordable Act on universal coverage has not yet covered all individuals as some citizens from the low earning class cannot afford the insurance cover cost (Shi & Singh, 2019). Mary suggested if the cost of healthcare can be lowered and more affordable, this can allow the lower-income communities to afford the cost of care.
