Reading Response: Supangkat, “Multiculturalism/Multimodernism”
Supangkat, Jim. “Multiculturalism/Multimodernism Download Multiculturalism/Multimodernism.” In Modern Art in Africa, Asia, and Latin America: An Introduction to Global Modernisms, edited by Elaine O’Brien, et. al., 106-119. Malden, MA: Blackwell, 2013.
Reading Guide and Prompt:
This essay was written by Jim Supangkat, an Indonesian art critic, in 1996. It is part of a larger discussion (still going on today) about what “modernism” is and when and where it exists – that is, what does modernism mean when we look at art outside of Euro-America? First read the short Introduction, which was written by the book’s editors and places Supangkat’s essay in historical context and summarizes his main argument. (The introduction starts on page p. 106 and ends at the very top of p. 107.) Then read the section, “Multimodernism” (from the bottom of p. 115 to the end of the essay on p. 118). Focus most of your attention on the last three paragraphs of the essay (all on p. 118).
