The Clay Siblings: Gerald Brown and Mike Tavares
Gerald A. Brown is a Chicago Southside native, currently based in Philadelphia, PA. She received her BFA from Syracuse University, double emphasis in Sculpture and Ceramics. She has researched in Paris as well as furthered her studies at Penland and Haystack Mountain School of Craft. In Philly, Gerald is a current member of the art collective Vox Populi, curating shows and special programming. In addition, she is the Social Media Curator for NCECA, one of the Board of Directors at Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts and co-founder of the Clay Siblings’ Project, a non-profit initiative providing free ceramic workshops around the country.
Mike Tavares grew up in Rhode Island, a child of parents both from the Cape Verde Islands. Despite being raised in the United States, Tavares’ parents ensured that he understood their culture, spoke their language and ate traditional Cape Verdean cuisine. Tavares received his BFA from Syracuse University, New York. During his studies, Tavares discovered his love for earthenware and woodfired ceramics. He now is in Springfield Illinois continuing his studies under Simon Levin as an apprentice. He is the co-founder and co-leader of The Clay Siblings, a non-profit that aims to make clay and corresponding opportunities more accessible to high schoolers and other young artists of all backgrounds and identities
The Clay Siblings’ Project is a non-profit initiative aimed to not only give insight on possible ventures and opportunities through clay, but change the overall view of who can be a practicing artist. We are committed to demonstrating that all people, regardless of race, gender expression, religion, socio-economic status or any other marginalized identity, have something valuable to give as well as gain from the ceramic community as well as the larger art world.

( can talk about: the work of ceramic which focused on the central theme of family and togetherness really resonated for me. The ceramic pots and plates which is in simple design form as well as simple colors depict a great smooth and soft tone for the ceramic project.)
