Contextualism is thinking of what the artist was meant to be and what the artist tried to say through the artworks. It can’t be assumption by me, it should be based on evidence from a wider variety of perspectives, and the context of the artist. The context could be consideration of culture, century, personal background, and age of the artist. Contextualism is not a making hasty definitions or judgments of what I have on my mind. Studying works of art in artist’s cultural context is also important, because every single people have different thought, perspective, and backgrounds which is all of them can’t define the same way the other people do. We can assume what the artist tried to express if we keep in mind their context. This is why learning work of arts considered as dominant. Identifying their cultural context helps you a lot better understanding the purpose of their creation, and makes you able to see the way the artist elaborate their aesthetic piece they have made. It would be easier to understand if you think contextualism is observation of the creator, or presume yourself “as if I am the creator in that generation where the creator lived, what the aesthetic construction would be used for”.

I born and raised in east Asia, so I am telling you I am more comfortable on Non-Western art (Asian Art) better than Western art. I do not have a lot of knowledge of Asian art, but I have learned some Korean history since I was a kid, and I know what the Korea’s national treasures are, and what Korean think which is aesthetic, or valuable, because it is my country where I grow up. Nevertheless I am taking this class is Korea is not only one in Asia, and there is a lot more countries, absolutely I don’t know about different Asia countries’ art. I know Korea and Japan has similar concept of art because Japan took over everything valuable during Japan invaded Korea a long time ago, and they did not returned the art pieces after the empire of japan ends. Not only that, Japan sets some Korea’s art as their national treasure, so that might be a reason why Korea and Japan have similar art. Other than this, I’d love to learn how’s the other Asia’s art and history is. Not only that learning Korean history and art in the United State also could be a new experience, and new perception. For me, learning Asia history sounds more fun and interesting than learning Western history because I am used to lived in that country. So I am very excited and curious about what I will learn in this class.

Contextualism is the importance of background information or other information that may need to be said before the subject, topic, or even artwork in hand. In many cases the importance of contextualism is crucial regardless of the subject, to expand on this and given the importance of context. It is hard for a person to jump in mid-conversation and give their own thoughts or opinion. That is where the context of the situation really helps the person understand what the discussion or conversation is about allowing them to formulate ideas and responses. While I am not really an art person nor am I well versed in it so I may have the wrong interpretation of contextualism within art, but from what I do know having the context of the artwork simply allows for one to have a deeper understanding of why the artist may be portraying in one of their art pieces. The lack of context could make it so that it is hard for one to interpret or to understand what the artist is trying to say. The importance of which can be translated within different cultures. As one can learn more about the culture where the artwork resided, and the many influences that it may have had on the artist. Alongside the culture, there are many more factors that affect the artist’s view. Including class, the current state of the nation whether they are at war or not, political agenda, and even different events within his own community. These factors affect one’s portrayal of art and the message surrounding it. Hence, the importance or the lack of consideration of one or more of these factors may lead to a misinterpretation of a person’s art affecting more than just the message but possibly even all other artworks that person may have created.

One valuable aspect to learn Non-Western Art is to widen one’s understanding of different cultures, as it allows for one to find a deeper understanding of other cultures. This deeper understanding allows many of us to empathize and view the way we see the world. This unlocks a new perspective for those who are observing which may affect the way one views their own beliefs, morals, and religion. While I may not be well versed in art I can attest that viewing artwork from different regions of the world makes one realize the differences in societies. To go in-depth, I was born in the Philippines and had moved to the US sometime around 2014, and through the years that I have lived in the US, I came to realize that cultures here are different and it is reflected in art, where the US has a centralized focus on the individual. In comparison, Filipino art focuses a lot on communities where it is clear that there is less of an emphasis on the individual and more towards how those individuals function to make successful communities. From it, one can deduce that there are key differences that distinguish the two from one another. It is that distinction that allows for one to truly reach within the different culture and empathize with one and view it as it means to be. Hence this is one of the most valuable aspects of Non-western art as it allows for one to not only empathize with others and view things in their way, but it allows for an individual to reflect on their own culture, morals, and views within their own culture and society it may allow for new ideas to formulate and those could blossom to answers for problems that their society or even their community could be facing.
