ENG 121
30 July 2021
As regained his senses from the bright lights and loud cheering, he was lost as to what happened. The last thing he recalled prior to losing consciousness was attempting to break out of his opponent’s triangle, a situation he had been in many times before. Ivan started doing mixed martial arts during his late teens, he used to as an outlet for his anger but quickly fell in love with the sport. Practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for years achieving the rank of brown belt while also working on his striking game with Muay Thai, Ivan felt confident in his craft. Over the years Ivan worked tirelessly to get better, but never forgot what it felt like being a white belt. The constant ass beatings he would receive along with the countless times he would tap on his partners body letting them know he couldn’t take anymore. Each roll ended the same way, Ivan fighting for dear life as his sweat fell onto the mat leaving droplets with each position they maneuvered to.
Being a white belt sucked since Ivan could only attempt what he was taught, but that’s much easier said than done when someone who weighs 50-100 pounds more than you is crushing down on your chest. As Ivan gasped for air and struggled to control his breathing, he could hear the ticking of the clock over the noise of others rolling, hoping that the bell was close to ringing Ivan would try to steal a glance as he moved from under side control to turtle position. Noticing what Ivan was doing, his partner for the roll a purple belt named Tony felt bad and had them restart. As they gave each other a pound, Ivan grabbed Tony’s Gi in hopes he’ll be able to control a body part to pass his guard and gain side control. As the adrenaline in Ivan’s body reached its max he threw himself onto Tony’s guard in hopes of getting position, but instead ended up in an armbar submission where he felt the pressure of his bone being extended in the opposite direction.
Ivan thought about his time as a white belt often seeing how much he has progressed and how he is now in position to “bully” the white belts in his gym. Having spent years honing his craft, Ivan no longer became winded after one roll as he was able to control his breathing, so whenever an opponent was in mount position Ivan did not gasp for air as he used to. However, when an opponent of higher rank would have knee on belly, Ivan would feel the sharpness of their knee piercing into his stomach and had no other choice but to exert extra strength to change positioning.
After years Ivan began competing in Jiu Jitsu tournaments where he would go on to win a couple while losing two. Those two losses weighed on Ivan as he was very competitive and hated losing. The feeling of being a loser left a sour taste in Ivan’s mouth and dwelled on him as he dedicated more time to training in order to ensure that he not lose again.
