Step 1: Choose a paper topic:

Topic 1: Compare ads (1730s to 1790) about runaways from Southern Colonies with ads for runaways from northern colonies. Make sure you have ads from both northern and southern colonies. You will have to find Southern colonies in the Virginia database or North Carolina database.

Topic 2: Compare ads from northern states and southern states from 1774 to 1820. Make sure you include ads from a variety of states and decades.

Topic 3: Compare runaway slave ads from the old south (Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Maryland) with the trans-mountain west (Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas) during the period from 1821 to 1860.

Topic 4: Compare runaway slave ads from the 1840s to runaway slave ads from the 1850s.

Topic 1: Students must have 12 ads from newspapers from northern colonies (Conn, Mass, NJ, NY, Penn) and 12 ads from southern colonies between the 1730s to 1773. You can decide whether your 25th ad is from the north or south.

Topic 2: Students must have 12 ads from newspapers from northern states (Conn, Mass, NJ, NY, Penn, RI) and twelve ads from southern states between the 1774 to 1820. You can decide whether your 25th ad is from the north or south.

Topic 3

Each student is responsible for 12 ads from 1821 to 1850 from the old south (Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Maryland) and 12 ads from the trans-mountain west (Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas). You can decide if your 25th ad is from the old south or trans-mountain south.

Topic 4

Each student is responsible for 12 ads from the 1840s and 12 ads from the 1850s. You can decide if your 25th ad is from the 1840s or 1850s.
