SOCIAL ANALYSIS REPORT
Your Social Analysis Report is due Week 10. In this assignment you will use the Triangle Model of Social Analysis from your textbook to conduct an analysis of the social problem that your group selected at the proposal stage of the assignment. A detailed overview of this assignment is posted in the Assignments folder.
The report should be 6-8 pages double spaced, Times New Roman font size 12 with 1 inch margins, not including your title page. You only have 6-8 pages so you cannot include everything. Only include information that is relevant to your social analysis, and what the assignment is asking. One of the skills developed in writing reports is determining what research is relevant, and what research is not. Please post further questions on the discussion board.
What you need to keep in mind is that this report asks for a social analysis – not a scientific analysis, not a list of solutions and not just a description of a problem. You must apply the Triangle Model of Social Analysis in order to succeed (p.79 of your textbook).
I recommend you structure the assignment as follows:
__________________________________________________________________________________
I Introduction
What is the problem? What makes it a social issue?
Who or what is affected (who are the stakeholders – both directly and indirectly affected)?
Why is your group interested in this topic?
II Social Analysis Using the Triangle Model in your Textbook
A Individual Acts
Perspective #1 (Approximately 1 paragraph)
Perspective #2 (Approximately 1 paragraph)
Perspective #3 (Approximately 1 paragraph)
B Systems/Structures
Perspective #1 (Approximately 1-2 paragraph)
Perspective #2 (Approximately 1-2 paragraph)
Perspective #3 (Approximately 1-2 paragraph)
C Ideologies
Perspective #1 (Approximately 1 paragraph)
Perspective #2 (Approximately 1 paragraph)
Perspective #3 (Approximately 1 paragraph)
III Conclusion
Summarize the main points of your report, and emphasize how they relate to GNED500 (1-2 paragraphs). You may wish to add what surprised you in writing this report – did you change your mind about the issue? Did you realize that the media says one thing, your family says another and this is informed by a particular ideology? There is some flexibility in how you conclude the report.
Briefly discuss what is being done about the social issue and what can be done (i.e. outline two recommendations for social action that are within the realm of possibility – you will need to read ahead in your textbook to write )
__________________________________________________________________________________
For each perspective paragraph, your focus should be on how that particular perspective contributes to the problem. How does this factor maintain the problem so that it continues? As this is a research report, your paper must contain in text references and a works cited page. Arguments made in your perspectives and how they serve to maintain the problem should be supported by research/literature. Make sure your research includes diverse sources, such as journal articles, reports, books, etc. See the instructions for the Proposal and Report for more details on the research aspect. As well, feel free to ask librarians for help – they are a great resource and have lots of knowledge on how to conduct research.
Last, but not least, here is a brief example of how you might approach the above perspective paragraphs if your social issue were sweatshops:
Individual Acts
– Perspective 1: Consumers purchase the products creating a demand. These consumers purchase the goods, knowing or unknowing how they were made. The lack of opposition from the consumers allows the multinational corporations to continue to run such factories, making an exuberant profit to the detriment of the workers in developing countries. This creates a cycle of demand – production – profit in which the workers are most disadvantaged.
– Perspective 2: Workers elect to work in the factories. The will of the workers to work creates a situation where there is always the potential to fill the position with more workers should a worker refuse to work in such conditions. Given that there is a scarcity of jobs, workers that are expendable make it difficult for any change in the problem. Moreover, the workers are forced to work because they must support their families. Often, working in a sweatshop is the only source of income for a family and is therefore essential for survival
I hope that this example helps to explain the assignment. Please note that in your report you must include more information for each perspective (Approximately 1 paragraph or ½ a page). This is only a very brief example (not a complete analysis) to demonstrate the meaning of diverse perspectives for each component of the triangle model. As well, in your report, you want to use headings and sub-headings that are appropriate for your issue. You do not need to write “Perspective 1” at the beginning of the paragraph. Instead, write an introductory sentence for the paragraph such as, “One individual acts that impacts sweatshops is the purchase of goods which creates demands…”
