It has been said that Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of movable type and the printing press is the most important invention of the millennium. Why? What is the history of Gutenberg’s invention? How did the press change life and culture? What books did he publish?

What theological issues drove Martin Luther to break from the Roman Catholic Church? Discuss the spread of Lutheran ideas throughout Europe. Find one artifact that exemplifies these events as an example, describe it in detail and explain its significance

How can you identify the Renaissance style called “The German Tradition”?  Describe and compare works by at least one Flemish and one German Renaissance artist to support your explanation. How will this be important in history?

How did the Portuguese slave trade affect the West African culture?  Be sure to explain the routes of the slave trade and describe at least one of the artifacts that depict the events of this time and place in history.  How did the voyages of Portuguese explorers in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries compare to those of Zheng?

Question #2 – due by day 7

Before answering this week’s question #2, please do the following reflections from the required readings  (these do not need to be completed in writing – you are thinking and reflecting on these to be able to answer the questions)

Choose two Renaissance paintings and consider the use of linear perspective, art medium and process, and iconography (symbolism) of each painting. Then, consider how the arrival of humanism, one of the key underlying themes of the Renaissance, changed values, experiences and perceptions.

THEN, Answer the follow questions for question #2:

How are your chosen paintings of the Renaissance different from what was produced in the Middle Ages? Cite two specific examples and explain by pointing out details in your description.  

What features of the Renaissance do you feel have survived to modern day? Describe specific examples (for example: Elizabethan stage; city grids in Teotihuacan and the Tang capital Chang’an in China).

For each set of questions the length required is 225 words minimum, in APA Style, fully cited and referenced. You should create one document in Word, Open Office or as a PDF. Please submit that paper in the submission link of the weekly folder. Your Safe Assign score should be under 20%. You have unlimited attempts to edit your submission, only the last one is graded.
