“Another Fine Mess: A History of American Film Comedy” feels like an author’s attempt to right that which is wrong. The book provides a historical journey of the American Film Comedy from the days of “City Lights” and “Knocked Up,” providing a retell of what American Film entailed from a comical perspective. The reading feels like thirsty chapters devoted to an individual performer/director, filling the gaps and connections linking Mae West to Doris Day. The reading is a pure attempt to change/right the legacy of American Comedy Film.
The reading “Sitcom: A History in 24 Episodes from I Love Lucy to Community” is a book offering the reader a chance to experience a fundamental and essential form that is Sitcom. The book provides a story of Sitcoms that used to be beautiful distractions that once served as a calming lullaby to America that was once gentle. Reading through the chapters, one can experience the sudden rift that occurred between television and entertainment. The book is a documentation of the growth of Sitcom from the times of “Lucy” to the “Phil Silvers Show,” “The Larry Sanders Show” to “30 Rock”.
