Persuasive Writing
Texts are written differently depending on the type of content and the target audience. Persuasive writing requires the writer to have a good mastery of the content delivered to compose writing that is convincing to the audience. The reason for that is that persuasive writing is intended to win the audience. It can only be done by presenting clear writing, which effectively employs ethos, logos, and pathos (Edlund and John). Comparing “Don’t Punish Trans Girls for The Mistakes of Others” by Dana Beyer and “Kids Aren’t Born Transgender, So Don’t Let Advocates Bamboozle You” by Walt Heyer, the latter, Heyer, is more persuasive than Beyer.
One of the reasons that Heyer in his Writing is the proper use of ethos. In persuasive writing, the use of ethos is cried to show the reader the writer’s credibility, and Heyer does it better than Beyer. This helps his article to present a more convincing argument. For instance, to make his writing credible, he describes how he is a victim of the trans-gender matter that he underwent his own “sex change “in April 1983(Heyer, 1). When he was mutilated, he stays that he had no idea that he would talk about the subject one day. This gives him the authority to be listened to by the audience. Although Beyer attempts to remain by giving a clear description of the transgender experience, he does not match up to the Heyer who uses a wide experience of himself and his interaction with the people who “appear in his inbox daily” (Heyer, 1).
Heyer is more persuasive than Byer in the trans-gender issue because he uses pathos more effectively than Beyer. Besides other forms of evidence to support, Heyer’s argument gives statistics provided by a reputable organization such as the American Psychological Association. To support his argument, he utilizes data from research done by Ihlenfeld that supports that people should not change their gender using hormone therapy. The research was carried out for five years on a sample of five hundred individuals. The research pointed out that eighty percent of the people who want to change their sex should not because the desire comes from psychological factors. Yet, there is no evidence of life improvement of post-operative transsexuals. On the other hand, Beyer’s article does not employ logos which makes it a weaker persuasion. The audience believes the information that is supported by statistics more than information that is not supported.
The other factor that qualifies Heyer is how he effectively uses emotions to convince his audience. He does this by expressing how parents explain to him about the therapist advising them to have their children change their names and personal pronouns and begin the journey of irreversible medical interventions to become the opposite gender. On this aspect, Beyer uses emotive language describing the experience of a 12-year boy who took estrogen to transition. However, the language used is not more illustrative. Therefore Heyer’s article comes out more convincing through pathos by giving his feelings that children should not be encouraged to transition having been a victim of the situation.
In conclusion, although the two articles give persuasions about their perspective about sex transition from the transgender issue, they do not come out equally persuasive. Heyer uses clear language with plausible elements of emotions, supported by statistics and credible sources. He further makes his writing more credible by describing the situation as a victim. Beyer does not compare him in persuading the audience. Therefore, given the last spot to choose between the two, Heyer would be considered more percussive than Beyer.
