The year is 2035.
Only half of the UN sustainability goals were met by the 2030 deadline and
although things have improved much, we still face serious climate disruption
issues. Because sea level has risen above that predicted, the past 10 years has
seen a great increase in the number of coastal fortifications, migration of lowland
communities, and development of man-made islands for purposes of re-
settlement. Much of the coastal area associated with the deepening, continental
shelf has been dotted with islands. In the United States, President Harris has
decided to utilize these islands for an experiment in management and
governance.
She has appointed a governing body to rule regional blocks of these man-made
islands. The Blocks are: the mid-Atlantic block, The Southeastern Block, The
Northeastern Block, The Gulf of Mexico Block, the Southern Pacific Block, the
Northern Pacific Block, and the Great Lakes Block. As a graduate of
environmental studies program you have been given first choice of assignment to
help in this endeavor. You will pick one of the regional blocks and develop the
environmental guidelines that will be used by inhabitants of the island in order to
keep a sustainable, environmentally efficient island community. Most of the
inhabitants are climate migrants (they have been forced from the previous
homes). That being said, you do have some control over who gets to obtain
citizenship and remain on ‘your’ island.
The Details:
As you sit in your command center you must provide a set of working
guidelines that are associated with pollution and associated environmental
management.
First: Pick the regional block that you will be directing and then name the island.
New island so you get to provide a new Name.
Onward: There is flexibility in your response but you should be as inclusive as
possible. The basic question is; how will pollution by avoided/managed ? This
should range from prevention through disposal. The focus here will be on
pollution abatement but, since you are the head person in this setting, feel free to
list how those not adhering to your laws/direction will be punished.
Please feel free to use your imagination, good sense, and humor but keep it concise. Responses will be graded on bases covered (e.g. did you consider water pollution, energy resources…..) so
spend some time with this. As always, if you are using significant references,
please cite your work. I do not have a minimal or maximum amount of verbiage that I am looking for but I think that if you only send me a couple of paragraphs you will likely NOT get a good grade. Touch all of the bases, think about as many scenarios as you can, and have fun
with the process. Good luck.
