This speech is designed for you to apply all of the concepts you have learned in this course.  The primary purpose of a persuasive speech is to change our views on a topic. For this class, your persuasive speech will communicate a problem and offer suggestions on how your audience can help solve the issue. Your topic should be of international importance, be intellectually challenging, timely, and interesting to your audience. Your thesis will be stated as a claim of policy and must call for a direct and specific course of action from your audience. In other words, you will suggest solutions that ask your audience to get up and do something (i.e., volunteer at a specific organization, sign a petition, or write a letter to our state representative).  Your speech will be based on sound reasoning and evidence and must include supporting materials.

You will work to achieve three goals with this assignment

select and research a topic that relates to a problem of international importance;

persuade us that there is a need to address a problem and why; and

effectively influence your audience in a desired direction.

Requirements

Your topic will discuss a problem of international importance. I recommend reviewing the following library pages to help you locate a topic for this speech:

Articles from either of these databases will count towards your published sources requirement.

The general purpose of your speech is “to persuade”. 

Your main points should follow a problem-solution organizational pattern. This means you will include two main points only in the body of your speech. You should not use any other organizational pattern for this speech.

The speech should be six to eight minutes in length.

Delivery is to be extemporaneous. Do not read your speech from cue cards behind the camera or from your monitor if using Zoom.

You will include vocal variation, purposeful hand gestures, eye contact, and professional physical appearance when delivering your speech.

Your thesis will be stated as a claim of policy. 

The introduction should be fully developed and include the 4 identifiable parts: attention getter, thesis, credibility, and preview of main points.

The conclusion should be fully developed and include the 3 identifiable parts: review of main points, restatement of purpose, and closing statement.

There should be a definite, logical connective bridging each component of the speech. You will move beyond using simple signposts and use transitional language.

Each main point should be clearly stated and developed.

Effectively use four different types of supporting materials (i.e., examples, narratives, definitions, descriptions, facts, statistics, and testimony).

Effectively use all three proofs (logos, ethos, pathos).

Use one visual aid effectively. You may use only one of the following as a visual aid in your persuasive speech. You are responsible for making sure your visual aids are big enough for all audience members and the camera to see. Visual aids should be shown for a limited amount of time during your presentation. It is not considered a visual aid if it is left up the entire time. Here are your visual aid options, choose only one:

One model. You should show your model for 15 seconds maximum while you are delivering your speech. Place your model out of view of your audience before and after you have shown it.

One image. You may hold up an image that is 8 1/2 x 11 in size or bigger or share your screen to show the image on Zoom. Please unshare your screen and resume gallery view in Zoom before you continue your speech. You will include a citation for your image in your reference list.

One video clip may be used as a visual aid and should be no longer than 30 seconds. You may share your screen to show the video on Zoom. Please unshare your screen and resume gallery view in Zoom before you continue your speech. You will include a citation for your video in your reference list.

One audio clip may be used as a visual aid and should be no longer than 30 seconds. You may share your screen to play the audio on Zoom. Please unshare your screen and resume gallery view in Zoom before you continue your speech. You will include a citation for your audio clip in your reference list.

Four Note Cards Required. You may only use your note cards for your supporting materials and research. Do not copy your outline on your note cards.

Your style (language choice) should be clear, appropriate, vivid, and varied.

Your delivery skills are to be the best so far; extemporaneous, conversational, energetic, non-distracting.

You will incorporate movement (triangle or diamond movement) in your speech.

You will incorporate facial expressions in your speech.

Cite at least THREE published sources throughout your presentation. Publish sources for this assignment are books, magazines, newspapers, academic journal articles, and/or documentary films. Keep in mind that some of these published sources may be accessible online. In addition to your three publish sources, you may incorporate information from a maximum of two .edu, .org, and .gov website sources. Do not incorporate websites that do not possess copyright dates and/or allow anyone to revise the material (i.e., Wikipedia, blogs, and personal websites).

Persuasive Outline: Your outline is required and should be submitted before you deliver your speech. The outline should be typed, using full sentences, and follow the Harvard style outlining symbols  The following elements are to be included and labeled in the margin or where appropriate (see Outline Template, Persuasive Outline Checklist, and Sample Outlines on the ):

Label and effectively use all three persuasive appeals; ethos, pathos, and logos. Do not label your persuasive appeals in the following sections: your thesis, preview of main points, transitions, main points, review of main points, and restatement of purpose. These sections help direct the audience towards our purpose, topic, main points, main point organization. Ethos, pathos, and logos are most effectively used in your subpoints where you arrange evidence to support your claims (hint: logos), attention getter or closing statement, and establishment of credibility (hint: ethos).

All components of the outline are labeled and main/subpoints use the Harvard Outlining symbols. 

Two or more APA formatted in-text citations

A reference list in APA format with at least THREE published sources cited within the outline and your visual aid. Publish sources for this assignment are books, magazines, newspapers, academic journal articles, and/or documentary films.
